On an open play Wednesday, we had many sign up, but I don’t believe all that many members actually played.  I teed off early at 3:39 and had to get out of their early, so I could be wrong.  Nonetheless it was perfect weather for the four teams playing in the first round: It was third ranked Young Gunz vs. 6th ranked The Loop & 5th ranked CTB vs. 4th ranked Unfinished Business. Top seeded Drawshank and second seeded WTF both had byes.

(3) Young Gunz vs. (6) The Loop: The first group off was Gavin May & Ryan Dahl (Young Gunz) vs. Steve Hallfin & Eric Berg (The Loop). May and Dahl propelled Young Gunz to a big lead with 14 points out of the gate vs. Hallfin and Berg’s 6 points. The second group to play was Vince Ross & Steve Binenstock (Young Gunz) vs. Brian Sutton and Paul Olson (The Loop). Binenstock and Ross pushed them a little farther ahead with a 12 to 8 point win over Olson and Sutton.

With two groups remaining, Young Gunz needed only 14.5 points to guarantee the win.  The third group off was Ramiro Sifuentes & Nick Ward (Young Gunz) vs. Bill Guthrie and Kevin Schultz (The Loop). Sifuentes and Ward did their job securing another victory with 10.5 points to Guthrie and K. Schultz’s 9.5. Needing only 4 points out of the last group, Young Gunz was almost there. And the final match was Nick Schultz & Kelly Gallagher (Young Gunz) vs. Marc Kenville & Mike Parsons (The Loop). Schultz and Gallagher must’ve been nervous, that they didn’t get it done for their team, coming in with only 6.5 points. However, needing only, it was just good enough. Young Gunz defeats The Loop 43 to 37. Young Gunz moves on to face WTF in a (2) vs. (3) matchup.

(4) Unfinished Business vs. (5) CTB: The first group off was Stacey Sundet & Wayne Nau (CTB) vs. Richard Brower & Ben Peterson (Unfinished Business). Nau took Brower 6-4 but Peterson took Sundet 6-4, leaving the match all tied 10 to 10 after the first group. The second group off was Chuck Kuglar & Dan Gregorich (CTB) vs. Curtis Medina & Ward Eames (Unfinished Business). Chuck & Dan had enough messing around, so they single-handedly destroyed Unfinshed Business’s dreams winning 15 to 5.

With two groups remaming, CTB lead Unfinished business 25 to 15, CTB needing only 15.5 more with two groups remaining.  The third group off was Matt Grove & Joel Longo (CTB) vs. Jim Husnik & Dan Roberts (Unfinished Business).  Husnik & Roberts pulled Unfinished Business’s dreams out from the ashes crushing Grove and Longo 14.5 to 5.5. Down to the final pairing, CTB lead Unfinished Business by only 1 point, 30.5 to 29.5. The final pairing of the evening was Stave Latham and Don Grove (CTB) against Mark Lange & Mike Dietrich (Unfinished Business). After 6 holes, Latham and Grove already secured 9 points. Needing only 1 point between the two of them over the last three holes, the pressure was off and they crushed it… scoring a total of 13.5 points to Lange and Dietrich’s 6.5. CTB defeats Unfinished Business, also, 43 to 37.  CTB will move on to face Drawshank Redemption in a (1) vs. (5) matchup.

As requested, I have attached the season ending player statistics.  Captains of the playoff teams, please feel free to use these statistics when determining your matchups.  The first link has the net scores for every player for every week and their average net scores.  The league average net score this year was 37.43.  The lowest single week net score this year was 27, by Ben Raak, followed by eight, 30’s and ten 31’s.  The highest net score this year was 49.

The top five lowest average net scores belong to:

(1) Dylan Niska – 33.91; (2) Richard Brower – 34.10; (3) William Guthrie – 34.44; (4) Trent Mayberry – 34.90; and (5) Kelly Gallagher – 35.00.

There were 30 (out of 177) players with a net average of even par or under.

2016 WNL Player Net Scores

This next link contains each player’s average gross score on Par 3’s, Par 4’s and Par 5’s.  The lowest scoring average on Par 3’s belongs to Dave Supalla with 2.95, followed by Kelly Gallagher with 3.0 and Brandon Meder with 3.05.  The lowest scoring average on Par 4’s belongs to Howie Hoffman with 3.96, followed by Joe Larson with 4.07 and Dave Supalla with 4.1.  The lowest scoring average on Par 5’s belongs to Howie Hoffman with 4.77, followed by Joe Larson with 4.86, and Dave Supalla & Brandon Meder with 4.9 & 4.91 respectively.

Also on this link, contains every player’s total number of eagles, birdies, pars, bogies, dbl bogies, and others.  There were 11 players with eagles this year. Brandon Meder topped the chart with 2, ironically getting them both in the same round. Howie Hoffman and Joe Larson tied for most birdies at 24 followed by Brandon Meder with 18. The title of Par King is split this year between Nick Schultz and Eric Berg with 61 a-piece. The very distinctive title of, most “others” goes to Larry Jocelyn, with 42.

Statistical Reports

That’s a wrap! The regular season is over and the playoffs begin! Thanks to all who participated this year, and congratulations to the teams making the playoffs. Please remember, that if you want to play next week, it is open to the entire membership, not just the teams that made the playoffs. You will just need to reserve a tee time from Brookview before Sunday evening.

There were six playoff spots up for grabs. The top two spots went to the two teams with the highest overall points total. Here’s how that race played out:  Going into Week 16, Drawshank held the top spot by 12 points over CTB, by 14 points over Young Gunz and by 19 points over WTF (Where’s the Fairway). Drawshank recorded a slightly better than average score of 41, but all three teams trailing them scored higher. CTB scored 46.5 points, but still fell 6.5 points short; Young Gunz scored 47.5, but still fell 7.5 points short; and finally, WTF scored a league record shattering 56.5 points coming from 19 points back, to fall only 3.5 points short of Drawshank. Even though WTF fell just short of the top spot, in their record-setting display, they ripped the first round bye from CTB by 3 points, in earning the 2nd highest overall points.

The third and fourth spots went to the first half winner and the second half winner, respectively.  Young Gunz was unable to elevate their position and take one of the top two spots, but they rest easy knowing that they already secured the first half win. Leading up to Week 16, The Loop held the second half title by 5 points over WTF, by 6.5 points over Drawshank, by 12 points over Unfinished Business, and by 13.5 points over Range Balls.  The Loop crashed and burned only scoring 32.5 points, ceding their top spot to a team more worthy. WTF crushed it, scoring 56.5 points and easily overtaking the second half win. Drawshank was steady eddy putting up 41 points, and securing the 2nd place spot for the 2nd half.  Unfinished Business charged ahead with 45.5 points, which was significant, as they were 12 points behind The Loop, and they beat them by 13. But also significant because they were only 1.5 points ahead of Range Balls. Range Balls made quite a charge scoring 46.5 points, moving ahead of The Loop by 1/2 a point! BUT falling a measly 1/2 a point short of Unfinished Business!  SO….. The second half winner went to WTF by an astounding 17 points, and with that title, each player on WTF gets $40 in chits. However, since they already secured the second overall spot, the second half winner drops to the second place team, which was Drawshank Redemption. And with that title, each player on Drawshank gets $20 in chits. Again, since Drawshank already secured the top overall spot, the second half winner drops to the third place team, which was Unfinished Business, ousting The Loop by 1 point and Range Balls by only 1/2 point!!  So, since Young Gunz won their half outright, they get the 3rd playoff spot, and Unfinished Business gets the 4th playoff spot. Range Balls loses out on the playoffs by 1/2 point.

Finally, the Wildcards….. Coming into Week 16, WTF held the first wildcard spot and Cowboy Jacks held the second wildcard spot. Neither team held onto those positions…..We all know what happened with WTF, as they elevated their game and their position to the second overall spot, leaving the first wildcard spot vacant.  But since they evicted CTB from the second overall spot, CTB had to fall somewhere, so they fell into the 1st wildcard seat, finishing the season with 574 points, third most overall.  Young Gunz finished with 573 points, fourth most overall, but since they already have the 3rd playoff spot, they don’t get the second wildcard spot.  Unfinished Business started the last week, 9.5 points behind Cowboy Jacks for the second wildcard spot, and they happened to play each other this week. In the end, Unfinished Business finished Cowboy Jacks’ business, crushing them by 14 points, holding them to only 31.5 points. Unfinished Business would have taken the second wildcard spot, but since they slipped past The Loop for the second half win, by 1 point, the second wildcard spot was up for grabs between The Loop and Cowboy Jacks.  This was a battle of attrition…. Cowboy Jacks started the last week, 3.5 points behind The Loop in the overall point total. The Loop gave them an opening, only scoring 32.5 points…. but Cowboy Jacks, facing a fierce opponent in Unfinished Business, could only muster 31.5 points, losing grip of the second wildcard spot, by 4.5 points.  The Loop ended up with 554 points total, which was tied for 5th overall (with Unfinished Business), and a shoestring playoff birth.

Playoffs:

Round 1 (Aug. 24th): (1) Drawshank Redemption and (2) WTF get byes. (3) Young Gunz will play against (6) The Loop. (4) Unfinished Business will play against (5) CTB.

Round 2 (Aug. 31st): (1) Drawshank Redemption will play the winner of (4) Unfinished Business and (5) CTB. (2) WTF will play the winner of (3) Young Gunz and (6) The Loop.

Championship (Sept. 14th): There is no play on Sept. 7th as Brookview will be aerating the greens on Sept. 6th.

Week 16 noteworthy individual performances: Dick Koppy decided that he just doesn’t like to putt on hole 1, so he knocked it in from 180 yards for an eagle.  Needless to say, he earned the closest-in-two flag event.  But, he wanted to prove he could putt if he had to, so he decided to take the longest putt flag event on hole 9 as well.  Dan Anderson & Ted Roberts decided to break the two man low net record with a -12, 60; shooting net 29 and net 31 respectively. Compared to that, Brandon Meder & Barry Nelson’s -9, 63; and Robert Wise & Chris Garcia’s -9, 61 (on a shortened back nine) were fairly unimpressive…. Brandon Meder took the low gross for the 2nd week in a row, finishing his regular season strong with a -2, 34. Right on his heals were Dave Supalla and Joe Larson with -1, 34’s on a shortened back nine.

Two Man Low Net Score:

1st:  Dan Anderson & Ted Roberts (front) – 60: $17.50 each

Week 15 was the was the week of the “haves” and the “have nots”.  There were 4 teams that scored 48 points or more, and there were 6 teams scoring only 30 points or less.  Making the biggest fall, from 3rd to 8th, was Zejdlik; and the biggest jump from 12th to 7th, was Unfinished Business. Cowboy Jacks finished with the most points of the week, and for that matter, the most single week points all year, with 52.5.

With only one week remaining, Drawshank overtook CTB for 1st overall by 12 points. Drawshank has all but clenched a first round bye. CTB is in a tight race with Young Gunz for the 2nd overall position and a first round bye. CTB is up by only 2 points. Young Gunz has already clenched a playoff spot with the first half win, but could elevate themselves to a first round bye if they can clench that 2nd overall position from CTB.  There is only a three horse race for the second half winner, between The Loop (1st), WTF, (5 points back), and Drawshank, (6.5 points back). WTF has the first wild card spot and Cowboy Jacks, with there 52.5 points, catapulted themselves into the second wildcard spot, 9.5 points ahead of their closest competitor.

Top Individual Performances: Brandon Meder took the low gross with a 35, ousting 2 of his own teammates, Barry Nelson and Mike Ryan (36’s); and Nick Schultz (36). Dan Roberts and Jim Hegedus dropped the net 29 bombs this week.

With only two weeks left in the regular season, the race is tightening for those six playoff spots.  CTB, started off the year with 4 weeks below 40 points, but they have not scored under 40 points since.  They are leading the race to the first overall position and a first round bye.  Behind them is Drawshank, with some dominating performances through week 10, but slumping ever since, they are 4.5 points behind CTB, but still have a great chance at getting a first round bye. Holding the third overall points lead is Zedjlik, who is 15 points behind Drawshank.  They currently have the 1st wildcard position, but are only 1/2 point behind The Loop for the second half win. Young Gunz holds the 4th overall point total, but since they won the first half, they are seeded in the 3rd or 4th position. With the 5th overall points lead, The Loop is qualified for the 2nd wildcard spot, but since they currently hold the second half lead, they are bumped up to the 3rd or 4th position. As a result, WTF has now taken the 2nd wildcard spot with the 6th overall point total.  There are 4 teams within 10 points of WTF looking to take that spot in the last two weeks.  Additionally, there are 4 teams within 10 points of The Loop, for the second half win and a playoff birth.

Week 14 highlights: The 9 point swing between WTF (42 points) and Six Pack (33 points) gave WTF the 2nd wildcard spot over Six Pack by 2.5 points leaving Six Pack outside, looking in.  Another notable jump is Cowboy Jacks, with 45 points this week, they are now only 7 points out of the 2nd wildcard spot and a playoff birth. They jumped from 11th to 8th. Drive 4 Show had the best score this week with 46 and jumped from 13th overall to 10th and is only 10 points back for the 2nd wildcard spot and only 9 points back for the second half win.

One final note, even though CTB and Drawshank can’t win the second half playoff spot if they continue to hold one of the top two overall spots, they can still win the second half chits. It’s $40 per person to the winning team and $20 per person to second. As of right now, that money is going to The Loop (first) and to Zejdlik (second).

Top individual performances: Hoffman (34) ousted Nick Schultz and Kelly Gallagher (35’s) by one for the low gross. Hoffman’s opponent happened to by Schultz making for a solid match.  Sam Ronlund and Kent Riggs dropped net 29 bombs ousting Rick Bollin’s net 30, by one.

It was a great weather day for golf and for the annual President’s Cup!

We had 2 flights(white net & blue net) competing along with the President’s flight. The modified stableford scoring made for an interesting competition:

FIrst and foremost…the President’s Flight saw a new champion crowned – Matt Doherty unseats Paquette as champ and edged Steichen by one point! Congrats Matt!

There was great competition in both the WHITE and BLUE net flights. Some new comers arose and some stalwarts prevailed, Here are the results:
