Metro Sr Teams split at Brookview

The Brookview Valley team hosted this week on a great day for golf. They beat a good University team 15-9. Of course captain @Steve-Slivken was there with his clipboard, bullhorn and stopwatch to ensure everything went smoothly

The Valley team was led by Tom Hansen and Sheldon Silberman with 5 points each (6 max). Stan Hop chipped in 4 more and Marty Mangold fresh off his 60th birthday found just won with his net 76.

The Golden team lost a close one to Oak Marsh 11-13. Ted Roberts and Roger Hamm each took 4, while Doug Maday kicked in 3 with his split match. Steve Susich did not have his best stuff and was blanked versus a net 73.

Next week we play at Gross. Check out all the results and standings at http://metroseniors.org and if you are interested in playing and are over 50, contact Steve Slivken or Roger Hamm.

Metro Senior Teams have a Tough Day at Valleywood

The two Brookview Metro Senior teams had a tough day at Valleywood Friday. It was hot and muggy. Thank goodness for a little breeze.

The Valley team, which garnered ten points, was led by Tom Hansen and Dan Olson. Olson played well and won his match 6-0. Hansen tied for the low score of the day, firing a 77 and won 4-2. But then, something happened. Marty Mangold must have been ailing, lost his mojo, and was defeated 0-6. Randy Zejdlik’s back must still be ailing as he too was defeated 0-6.

The Golden team, which secured eight points, was led by their captain, Roger Hamm, who shot a 93 (net 78), to win his match 5-1. Ramiro Sifuentes also played well (84, net 74) but lost his match 2-4. Doug Maday did not have his usual stellar day and was defeated 1-5. And Chuck Bernardy slipped a little (he’s having a great season) and lost his match 0-6.

Currently, in the sixteen team field, the Valley team is in 7th place and the Golden team is in 14th place. This Friday the Valley team hosts the event at Brookview. Hopefully both teams can take advantage of their home course.

2-Man Scramble Results

Another weekend where all the bad weather somehow missed Brookview. We had a few flirting moments but barely had a rain drop.

We had another full tournament, with 52 players. In our Gross Division we had a two-way tie at -5 (67). Congrats to Justin Wallace + Tom Nestvold and Matt Grove + Richard Brynteson for earning $57.50 and 88 BMGA Cup points for each player.

In the Net division we had another tie. At -9 (63), we had Jim Sherburne + Ward Eames and Doug Paquette + Larry Hahka. They will also receive $57.50 and 88 BMGA Cup Points each.

In third place in the Gross Division, we have Doug Paquette + Larry Hahka. They earned $35.00 for their efforts. No BMGA Cup points as they already scored a greater number in the Net Division.

Speaking of the Net, we had a massive pile up at -8 with a three-way tie for 3rd place. Congrats to Justin Wallace + Tom Nestvold, Matt Grove + Richard Brynteson and Stan Hop + Steve Shellenbaum. They will receive $12.00 for their efforts. In addition, Stan and Steve earned 16 BMGA Cup Points for the 3-way tie.

Our next weekend event is the Club Championship on August 15th and 16th.

8-Man Senior Team Falls to Columbia

With an undermanned team, the Brookview Senior 8-Man team was defeated by Columbia 8-4.  We missed the regular services of  the always reliable Tom Hansen,  Steve Hartmann, and Forrest Nelson.   Unfortunately Charlie Tsatsos also had a last minute work conflict and could not compete.  I am not sure how many matches were close, but here are the final results.

Mark Kraus and Doug Zuck tied their match 1 1/2- 1 1/2, so obviously that match was close.  I heard from a very reliable source that Mike Deede and Jim Sanford unfortunately did not have the usual stellar games, and they fell 0-3.  Then one of the MVP’s of the season, Perry Jacobson, and his partner Steve Houtz, won their match 2 1/2- 1/2.  I don’t think Perry has lost a match in three years (oops!  Maybe recently at Highland National).   In the final group, Steve Merriman was forced to play as a single for a few holes until Gary Ridout filled the emergency opening on hole #4.   Always the loyal competitor, Gary is rumored to have raced by local sheriffs on his way back from Wadena to get there as soon as he could.   Unfortunately, the story did not end well as they were defeated 0-3.

Thanks to Mark Kraus for captaining yesterday.  Could be a sign of the future.  Although the weird 2020 Covid 19 season is over for the team, 2021 looks solid as we have a lot of good players.

Metro Seniors Split at Green Haven

The Valley team lost a close one 11-13 to Daytona @Jim-Sanford and @Stan-Hop led the way with 5 points each. Unfortunately @Steve-Shellenbaum and @Randy-Zedjlik could only muster 1 point total.

The Golden team won handily 16-8 over Valleywood. @Doug-Maday led the way with all 6 points and @Richard-Courtney came away with 5. @Pete-Steichen and @Doug-Diedrich also contributed with 5 total. No one was shut out, leading to a great team victory.

Brookview Golden jumped 2 spots in the standings to 13th and are crawling back. Brookview Valley is currently tied for 7th. 21 points separate the teams.

Next match is at Valleywood where Brookview Valley plays the host team and Brookview Golden plays Fountain Valley. Track all the action at metroseniors.org

16-Man Team Buzzed at Home

We ran into a buzz saw against Fountain Valley on Sunday. Apparently, a bunch of the big guns from Valleywood decided to leave the club and join Fountain Valley because they were raising their rates (!). We actually played them very tough but came up short and lost 10.5 – 13.5.

Reports on the ground were that they had 5 rounds of 70 or lower! Trent Peterson led the charge with a smooth 66 in the first group…playing the day before the State Am at Edina CC where he would go on to finish THIRD at -9!!! Other notables were John Holmes and Justin Burleson, two guys that have had prominent amateur careers in MN. Have to think these guys should be bumped up to a higher division next year.

Mike Sustad and Kelly Gallagher led the Brookview squad with a rounds of 70 and 71. Great playing guys!

Nice job hanging in there guys. We did a great job to have a chance to beat these studs with the last group coming up 18.

On the other side of the standings Bald Man Brewery and I Like big putts both lost but still have a commanding lead in their divisions.

Both Metro Senior Teams Salvage Ties at Daytona

Both Brookview teams earned 12-12 ties in their Metro Senior team matches at Daytona.  The Brookview Valley team was led by Steve Shellenbaum’s smooth 89 (with a 17 handicap) to win his match 6-0.  Jim Sanford came from behind to tie his match 3-3.  Sheldon Silberman fought hard in his 4-2 defeat, while Steve Slivken’s marginal game at best earned his team 1 point in his 5-1 defeat.

The Brookview Golden team was led by Doug Diedrich’s outstanding 89 (with a 21 handicap) to dominate his match in a 6-0 win.  Ted Roberts continued his winning ways with a 4-2 victory.  Chuck Bernardy ran into an old veteran from Hiawatha, played well on the back nine in his 4-2 loss, while Richard Courtney came up short in his 6-0 defeat.

Currently the Valley team is in 8th place in the 16 team field, while the Golden team is in 13th place.
