WNL Week 10 Results (6/28/23)

With thick air, swirling winds and lush fairways and greens, the WNL jumped into the second half of the season. This week produced some shuffles in the standings but no changes at the top. The wild-card chase is tight and getting tighter – there are four teams within ten points of each other for the two wild card spots in the BCC and three teams within 1.5 points for the second wild card spot in the GVC.

Team Hack Attack (3) is still leading the entire league with 426.5 points but their lead is shrinking.

Next week we are off for Independence Day week. Celebrate the Nations birthday and relax! (See you on the course?)

Shout out to Doug Paquette who is now our WNL MVP leader with 53.5 points and a 6.7 scoring average. The top 12 qualify for the season-ending Shootout.

Remember:

  • If you are not scheduled to golf on any particular night, we can use you as a spotter. It can help with pace of play.   To spot, just report to the pro shop and let them know and you’ll get a cart and flags for marking the ball. Common holes for spotting are #2, #3, #14, and #16. Or you can range around helping the groups that are slow catch up.

Weekly WNL Director Stats

  • Legibility was really good again this week – great job scorekeepers! Here is a listing of the the problems that slow down score entry:
    • Number cards without finish time: Front: 2, Back: 2
    • Cards with folds across scores: Front: 5, Back: 3
    • Cards with missing or addition errors: Front: 1, Back: 3
    • Cards missing team numbers or full names: Front: 1, Back: 0
    • Starting Tee times were on 32 of 32 matches. (Please enter the scheduled tee time, not your actual time to tee off.)
  • Pace of play – The front finished in 2:30 – fairly typical and back finished in 2:40 minutes – slowest pace of the year. Keep working on it and keep your foursome on the heals of the group in front of you – everyone will appreciate your efforts! More spotters or rangers might help – volunteer if you can!

Weekly Reminders

  1. If an issue arises on the course during WNL play that may impact the result of a match, please bring the matter to the WNL Director’s (or other BMGA Board Member) attention so we can try to resolve it right away.
  2. If you are in the last group (6 PM tee time) please collect the on course flags when you leave the hole and put them in the bucket on the deck at the end of your round.

Scorecards

  • Please enter both the match start time and end time in the space provided. Make sure every bank on the card is filled in.
  • Scorecards should be signed by at least one player from each team.
  • Please don’t fold the card where scores are entered – this really impacts legibility.
  • If someone concedes a hole, please mark an “X.”  This is especially important when both players score a 9 but the hole is conceded by the player who picks up their ball first.

Rotation Results

What a crazy day. What started as a potential for rain, turned into extreme wind, a three-putt from three feet and random stories from a high school friend about how Stan Hop cost him multiple assists in a basketball season.

In the NET event, we saw several teams go low. First place was at -8 par, including a -1 down the stretch in Alternate Shot. You needed to be -5 under to make the money.

  1. Daniel (Sr.) Peters + Randy Zejdlik (-8)
  2. Steve Hartmann + Tom Hansen (-7)
  3. Howard Hoffman + Richard Brynteson (-6)
  4. Dan Gregorich + Joe Wrecza & Curtis Medina + Michael Saless (-5)

In GROSS event, we had two teams under par.

  1. Howard Hoffman + Richard Brynteson (-4)
  2. Steve Hartmann + Tom Hansen (-3)
  3. Brian Beitlich + Dan Grubb & Jim Sanford + Steve Slivken (+3)

The on course events.

  • #1 – Steve Slivken
  • #2 – Phillip Barlow
  • #4 – Dan Grubb
  • #8 – Chuck Bernardy
  • #9 – Kirk Williams
  • #10 – Brian Barlow
  • #11 – Joe Wrecza
  • #12 – Dylan Airhart

With this tournament we had a major shift in the Chase for the BMGA Cup. You can find all BMGA Cup Points here (https://www.golfgenius.com/pages/9651700126355343034)

Home match helps Metro Sr teams reverse course.

The Golden team hosted at Brookview on a hot Friday and was able to narrowly defeat 3rd place Columbia 13-11 ending their 2 match skid. Tom Hansen dropped a couple of holes quick, but went on a run, winning 6 of 7 in a nice stretch to win 4-2. Steve Slivken was down but nabbed holes 16-18 to win the back 9 and halve the match 3-3. Mike Deede, making a rare start, dropped the first 9 but won 7 of the last 9 to win 4-2. Steve Shellenbaum was one down on the 18th tee, but couldn’t square the match losing 2-4. Golden is T6th right now, 20 points out of 1st place and only 7 points out of 2nd.

The Valley team, still trying to climb out of the cellar stomped Bunker Hills 19-5 in a very convincing fashion, with every player winning their match. Greg Donahue, despite being a Patriots fan, contributed again with a nice 5-1 win in a very close match. Chuck Bernardy, proud of taking a 7 on #7, giving a stroke and still winning the hole, also won 5-1. Ted Roberts, doing Ted Roberts things, shot a net 73 and duplicated the 5-1 mark. Richard Courtney, lost 4 straight on the front 9, then came back to win 5 straight on the back and win the match 4-2. Valley is still dead last, (14th) but only 7 points out of 12th.

Next Friday is at Hiawatha. Who knows how many more matches we will play there? Valley takes on 3rd place Daytona. Golden plays the host, Hiawatha.

Rotation Details

The rotation is right around the corner. Here are the details for this weekends event.

Tee Sheet: https://www.golfgenius.com/pages/9605093392761538345

Team List: https://bmga.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/2023-Rotation-Team-List.pdf

Format Details. Remember, this is a team event and there are three distinct formats being played.

Holes #1 to #6 is a Two-Person Scramble Format. Must use each player’s drive at least twice. “Winter rules” will be allowed within 1 foot of the ball in play, not closer to the hole.

Holes #7 — #12 Fourball Format (a.k.a., Two-Man Best Ball). The team score is the better gross/net score of the two players.

Holes #13 — #18 Two-Man Alternate Shot Format
Player #1’s tee shot is used on the odd numbered holes (#13, #15, & #17)
Player #2’s tee shot is used on the even numbered holes (#14, #16, & #18)

Each team must identify Player #1 and #2 before the start of hole #13.

On each hole players alternate shots, playing the ball as it lies, until the ball is holed-out.

Players cannot switch balls during the play of a hole unless the ball is lost or damaged.

Handicaps: This is a NET and GROSS event and you are playing in both flights at the same time. You can win prize money in each flight but not BMGA Cup Points.

Many ask “how is the handicap” figured out? It is based on Appendix C of the USGA Handicap Process.

Handicap on holes 1 to 6 is based on 35% of the low and 15% of the high handicap.

Handicap on holes 7 to 12 is 85% of your course handicap.

Handicap on holes 13 to 18 is 50% of your combined handicap.

On Course Prizes

  • #2 – Long Drive
  • #4 – Closet to Pin

Brookview Metro Seniors continue slide, both losing 9-15.

The Golden team, stinging from it’s first loss last week, fails to bounce back losing to first place Fountain Valley. Dave Repinski, making his 2nd start could not follow his great 6 point performance and limped home with 1. Paul Yakshe in his first start shot a decent net 76 and split his match. Dan Olson, up to his normal standard dropped a net 68 and was able to get 5 points. Dave Bialke shot a net 79 and was buzz-sawed for the 2nd straight week by a net 65. This is what Dave had to say in an exclusive interview. With the loss the team falls to T6 in the league.

The Valley team, still trying to climb out of the cellar took on 4th place Braemar. Ramiro Sifuentes could not keep the hot roll going, getting swept by a net 70 opponent. Darin Allen shot a net 76 but could only manage 1 point. Captain Sheldon Silberman shot a net 72 and he was only able to get 2 points. Luckily Doug Diedrich came to the rescue with a net 72 and swept his opponent. Valley remains in the cellar.

Next Friday is an off week for the league, but we return to action at home when Golden hosts. Golden plays Columbia and Valley takes on Bunker Hills.

WNL Week 7 Results (06/07/23)

Division play shook things up a bit this week: In the BCC South, ForePlay (7) jumped from last to 2nd place with a 48.5 point win. Mid-Round Crisis (11) took over the lead position with 303.0 points while Team Hack Attack (#3) faded to 2nd place with a 35 point loss. In the GVC East, Who’s Your Caddy (6) claimed the lead with 45-35 win over previous division leader 9th Green at 9 (9). Next week brings conference competition which can have a big impact on wild card positioning.

  • Just a reminder: Two Wildcard winners from each Conference (highest scoring non-Division winner) will be the #3 and #4 seed in their respective Conference.

Shout out to Nick Ward with 44.5 total points in the MVP race leading Pete Crane (36.5) and Steve Couture (36.0). Lots of time to catch him, but that is a big lead!

  • Pace of play – not nearly as good as last week but the last few teams on both the front and back did a great time of catching up. On the front, the first team finished in 2:00! The third group lost 10 minutes and the fifth group lost another 14 minutes. On the back the first group finished in 2:08 but the second group slipped 16 minutes. By the fifth group we had slipped to a little over 2:30 with the last group coming in at 2:22. Metro Sr teams stumble at Wirth.

The Golden Team, undefeated through 4 weeks, fell to Braemar. Steve Slivken was in a tight match all day and his net 74 was good enough for a 3-3 split match, Jim Sanford had a slow start, dropping the front 9, but managed to grab the back for 2 points. Gary Scharmer came out strong and wont the front, but stumbled on the back a bit, but held on to split the match for another 3-3 split card. First time starter Dave Bialke didn’t have his best game and his opponent dropped a net 69 on him. The final was 8-16 loss for the now 4-1 Golden team.

The Valley Team were also beat 8-16 by Columbia. Greg Donahue shot a net 73 but wasn’t good enough versus his net 71 opponent and was blanked. Ramiro Sifuentes, also in a tight match shot his net 75 and lost the first 9, but bounced back against his opponent’s net 77 to win the 2nd 9 and halve the match 3-3. Doug Paquette shot a very nice net 72 but pulled an opponent that shot net 70. Somehow Doug won 5 of 6 points in that close one! Doug Diedrich unfortunately fell ill and was unable to complete his match. We hope that he is doing better.

The standings after week 5 have Valley still in last place, but closing with Valleywood managing only 1 point this week. Golden dropped from 2nd to a tie for 5th, showing just how tight the entire league is.
Individual results are here

Next week, June 9, the league travels to University where Golden tries to right the ship versus Fountain Valley and Valley tries to drag themselves from the cellar versus Braemar.
