WNL Week 18 Results (8/30/23)

The regular season is complete! Some tough battles were played and there was some shuffling of the qualifying wild card teams based on the last week of play. Congratulations to the division winners:

  • BCC North – Mid Round Crisis (team #11) and BBC #1 seed with 717.0 points
  • BCC South – Bald Man Brewing (15) and BBC #2 seed with 684.5
  • GVC East – Who’s Your Caddy (6) and GVC #2 seed with 709.0
  • GVC West – Team Hack Attack (3) and GVC #1 seed with 730.0

And to the four Wild Card teams (two from each conference):

  • BCC seed #3 – CTB (1) with 667.0 points
  • BCC seed #4 – ForePlay (7) with 664.0 points
  • GVC seed #3 – Sons of Parnachy (13) with 707.0 points
  • GVC seed #4 – Brooky Strong (4) with 698.5 points

Three teams had 13 wins during the season. The team with the highest winning percentage was Sons of Parnarchy with a 81%. However, Team Hack Attack scored 100 more points than they had scored against them. There are no prizes for statistical wins!

The three weeks of playoffs begin after Labor Day week, on September 13th with Seed #1 playing Seed #4 and Seed #2 playing Seed #3 in each conference. First tee times are at 3:30 PM. Captains will be selecting their eight players with designated tie-breakers.

There are no open slots for non-playing finalists although you are welcome to reserve a time to play after the league play is started and join everyone for refreshments and scoring after golf.

Nick Ward wins the MVP race with 85.5 total points. The twelve players with the best ten-score WNL total qualify for the season-ending Shootout on October 7, as do the dozen highest cup point players from the weekend events. Since some players qualify in both classes or cannot participate, others may move up the qualifying list until 24 players are selected.

WNL Week 17 Results (8/23/23)

This is it! One week in the regular season to go and only one team is technically out of reach of a division championship! This week’s Division swapped the second and third place teams in the GVC East standings and 3rd and 4th place teams in the GVC West. But the lead in several divisions are still legitimately up for grabs in the final week of Divisional play. Mid Round Crisis (11) looks to have a commanding 52.5 point lead in the BCC North but they play the second place team with 80 points on the line. In the BCC South, Bald Man Brewing (15) has a narrow 11 point margin.

In the GVC East, Who’s Your Caddy (6) holds a 18.5 point margin over the second place with the third place team set to play the second place team next week. It could be tough to unseat the leader if these teams play even against each other.  Team Hack Attack (3) continues to lead the league with a total of 690.5 points. They hold a pretty commanding 24 point lead over Sons of Parnarchy, their opponent in the final week of the season. Aside from the division winners, each conference advances two wild card teams to the playoffs.

Next week we begin play 20 minutes earlier on the front and 10 minutes earlier on the back than originally scheduled to avoid sunset – the first tee time on the front is 3:10 PM. The first tee time on the back is 3:20 and may be delayed by a scramble event making the turn right before the league. We have decided that the group originally scheduled in the last spot on the back for next week will move to the front and tee off at 5:50. Your captain will be communicating to you about these changes.

Even without playing this week Nick Ward continues to lead the MVP race with 78.5 total points closely followed by Doug Paquette with 78.0 points. The twelve players with the best ten-score WNL total qualify for the season-ending Shootout on October 7, as do the dozen highest cup point players from the weekend events.

Shout out to the five players with a net 1 this week. Jeff Olson and Tom Bischel both on #4 Jesse Doughty on #8, Andy Czech on #12 and Jeff Mirviss on #17.

Remember:

  • If you are not scheduled to golf on any particular night, we can use you as a spotter or ranger. It can help with pace of play.   To spot, just report to the pro shop and let them know and you’ll get a cart and flags for marking the ball. Common holes for spotting are #2, #3, #14, and #16. Or you can range around helping the groups that are slow catch up.

Weekly WNL Director Stats

  • Legibility was very good again this week. It seems like a lot of you forgot to enter the ending time – I chalk that up to the heat and being anxious to re-hydrate! Here is a listing of the the problems that slow down score entry:
    • Number cards without finish time: Front: 4, Back: 5
    • Cards with folds across scores: Front: 1, Back: 1
    • Cards with missing or addition errors: Front: 3, Back: 1
    • Cards missing or wrong team numbers or full names: Front: 0, Back: 1
    • Starting Tee times were on 32 of 32 matches. (Please enter the scheduled tee time, not your actual time to tee off.)
  • Pace of play – incredibly, given the heat, we finished in better than our average time: 2:25 on the front and 2:21 on the back. Nice job everyone!

Weekly Reminders

  1. If an issue arises on the course during WNL play that may impact the result of a match, please bring the matter to the WNL Director’s (or other BMGA Board Member) attention so we can try to resolve it right away.
  2. If you are in the last group (6 PM tee time) please collect the on course flags when you leave the hole and put them in the bucket on the deck at the end of your round.
  3. Post your score! (The league does not post for you). We highly recommend hole-by-hole posting as it does a better job of calculating your proper ESC score.

Scorecards

  • Please enter both the match start time and end time in the space provided. Make sure every bank on the card is filled in.
  • Scorecards should be signed by at least one player from each team.
  • Please don’t fold the card where scores are entered – this really impacts legibility.
  • If someone concedes a hole, please mark an “X.”  This is especially important when both players score a 9 but the hole is conceded by the player who picks up their ball first.

WNL Week 16 Results (8/16/23)

Oh what a week! The winds were blowing and scoring was difficult. The Bassett Creek Conference was shut out – no team in the conference won! Which, of course, means every team in the Golden Valley Conference won. Despite that fact, there were again no changes in standings this week. Par Then Bar (Team 14) earned an incredible 52.5 points over Fairway to Heaven. Team Hack Attack continues to lead the league with a total of 648.5 points but Sons of Parnarchy is creeping up as they now only hold a 21 point lead in their division going into the final two weeks of division play. With 160 points left to win, everyone still has a chance to win their division or sneak into the playoffs with a wild card.

Next week we begin play 10 minutes earlier than originally scheduled to avoid sunset – the first tee times are 3:20 PM. Your captain should have notified you several weeks ago but check to make sure you have correct times for the next two weeks.

Nick Ward continues to lead the MVP race with 78.5 total points closely followed by Doug Paquette with 67.4 points. The twelve players with the best ten-score WNL total qualify for the season-ending Shootout on October 7, as do the dozen highest cup point players from the weekend events.

Remember:

Weekly WNL Director Stats

  • Accept for one card, legibility was very good this week with only a few problems. The one card took a lot of forensic work to discover the scores and the players – please don’t make me do this! It was the 5PM tee time on the back. Team numbers were missing, scores were not added and the writing was horrible! Here is a listing of the the problems that slow down score entry:
    • Number cards without finish time: Front: 3, Back: 3
    • Cards with folds across scores: Front: 2, Back: 2
    • Cards with missing or addition errors: Front: 4, Back: 2
    • Cards missing or wrong team numbers or full names: Front: 0, Back: 2
    • Starting Tee times were on 32 of 32 matches. (Please enter the scheduled tee time, not your actual time to tee off.)
  • Pace of play – It was a tough night and we finished in the dark. The first group on the front started late and finished in 2:14. The next two groups did an incredible job and we were at 2:06 after three groups but we slid to 2:30 from there and ended with the last two groups in at 2:40. With the cloudy sky it was dark by then! The back started fast and drifted to about 2:20 until the last group which must have gotten lost and reported in around 2:24 but still ahead of our typical time.

Metro Seniors finish season in style

In the final week of the season in Metro Seniors each team plays the one closest to it in the standings. (e.g., 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4 and so on). The match was at Oak Marsh on a very soggy course that played long.

13th place Valley played 14th place Gross. Valley has been at the bottom of the standings most of the year and finally passed Gross last week.
Ted Roberts traded blows on the front 9 and lost 1 down. He then bounces off the ropes and blows the opponent away on the 2nd 9 winning the match 4-2. captain Sheldon Silberman won the 9th hole to tie the front 9. He then wins holes 10-12 & 16-18 to crush his opponent and wins 5-1. Richard Courtney, the contrarian, lost the 9th hole to lose the front 9 then lost the back in stunning fashion and was shut out 0-6. Late Sub and first time out this year, Emmy Yates showed no rust and won the front 4 up and was able to hold on to win the match as his opponent came roaring back to grab the 2nd 9. Emmy wins 4-2.
Overall, Valley won 13-11 and were able to finish their season in 12th place in the league, jumping over Como that dropped 2 spots to 13th.

5th place Golden took on 6th place Green Haven. Tom Hansen showed he was human and drew a net 68 (gross 78) opponent with a 0-6 final tally. Jim Sanford saw his buddy getting beat up and won the front 9 4 up and then posted a nice net 72 winning his match 5-1. Captain Roger Hamm, who skillfully topped a ball backwards on the first hole halved the front 9 with a win on holes 7 & 9 then added 2 birdies on the back to shoot a net 69 -against an opponent who also shot a net 69 – but was able to win the match 5-1 . Dan Olson had a double bogey train on the front, but righted the ship to lose the front side just down 1. He rode that wave to a match victory by his match play savvy winning 4-2.
In total, Golden won 14-10. They finished the season in 4th place, moving up one position.

Final Standings This Week Full Website

Sheldon and Roger wish to thank all the guys that played matches this year. Together we had 31 guys play in 112 matches across 13 area golf courses over 14 weeks.

Bonus Highlight: In the title match (1 vs 2) It was 2 time defending Champions, University versus 2020 Champions Fountain Valley.
Fountain Valley started the day with a huge 12 point advantage for the season.

University team shoots nets of 75, 68, 74, 71 to beat the stuffing out of Fountain Valley 18-6 to end the season in a dead-heat.

The co champions for the 2023 Metro Seniors Season are University and Fountain Valley. PIC

WNL Week 15 Results (8/9/23)

There are three weeks left in the regular season – the last two are division play so no team has anything locked up yet. There were no changes in standings this week. Team Hack Attack had a good week with a 49 point win increasing their league leading total to 605.5 points.  However, they only hold a 27.5 point lead in their division.

Nick Ward moved into the MVP lead with 71.5 total points. {corrected} The twelve players with the best ten-score WNL total qualify for the season-ending Shootout on October 7, as do the dozen highest cup point players from the weekend events.

  • Legibility was very good this week with only a few problems. We may have to issue calculators and pencils with erasers. Here is a listing of the the problems that slow down score entry:

Valley Kicked Butt at home in Metro Seniors

Valley, hosting Metro Seniors on Aug 4, and playing versus Wirth came out swinging and never stopped. Darin Allen, getting a battlefield promotion to the A spot won the front 9 2 up and stumbled a bit then won the last hole to split the match 3-3. Ted Roberts swept his opponent away with a 6-0 blanking. Doug Paquette won the front 9 FIVE! up and coasted to a 5-1 win. Captain Sheldon Silberman won the front 9 only FOUR up and also coasted in with a 4-2 win. Overall the 18-6 win pushed them out of the cellar and only 2 points out of 11th.

The Golden team had an odd match with each match a sweep. Mark Steinhauser didn’t have his best stuff and was blanked 0-6. Stan Hop shot a very nice net 73 and blanked hi opponent 6-0. Matt McClernan, making his only start of the year struggled like Mark and he got swept 0-6. Gary Scharmer, who has won 76% of the points he has played for this season swept his opponent 6-0. The 12-12 tie did not help the Golden Team standings, dropping them one spot back to 5th place.

Next week is the season finale where we play the team closest in the standings. Golden will play 6th place Green Haven and Valley will play last place Gross. The match is at Oak Marsh and all the matches go off at 8:00 in a shotgun. Prizes to be awarded after the round.
