Week 6 WNL Recap (5/29)

Brookview was looking lush and green on Week 6, but WNL dodged the rain for another beautiful night in Golden Valley.

Score Cards: Scorecards were good, with only 1 card missing the tee box. Looking to eliminate this section of the recap going forward.

  • Hole Max: A reminder, per the League Guide, if you reach 8 strokes and you have not yet holed out, you are to pick up your ball. If this happens (or you concede your hole outside of a given putt) please mark an X on your scorecard for the hole. This is new for this year and helps scorekeeping in Golf Genius. It is also in line with the new USGA handicap guidelines for holes that are not finished.

The League Guide (which Roger has memorized) calls out if you hit the hole max the best you can do is tie the hole (if both you and your playing partner hit the max). Regardless of your handicap.

Food Specials: Week 6 was the first night of the new 316 WNL food specials.

  • Each week there will be one $10 food option.
  • It will rotate between:
    • BLT w/ chips (5/29, 6/19, etc…)
    • Boneless Wing Basket (6/5, 6/26, etc..)
    • Wrap w/ chips (6/12, 7/10, etc…)

Scoring:  All scores have now been entered and posted to your GHIN.

WNL Week 5 Recap (5/22/24)

Lots of wind this week, and many, many wet spots! We played a shortened back nine as the fairway on #14 was still flooded from the overnight 2.75 inches of rain. We also shuttled players from the tee to the fairway on #5 as the pond covered the bridge entrance. Overall, the course was pretty playable considering the conditions. The greens were still rolling fast and the pace slowed a bit this week with the front finishing around 2:30 but the back ending at 2:45. Keep up with the group in front!

Score Cards: Lots of great looking cards this week! Everyone had tees properly identified. However, there was still one card missing a last name. Several folks played with incorrect handicaps so if you see a different point score than what you had on your card, check your own and your opponents handicaps – the system automatically adjusts. There were numerous addition errors as well. When you don’t get these things right, we have to manually check for correct data and it takes extra time.

  • Tee Box: We had no cards that were missing the tee box. Continue to mark if you’re playing Blue / White (members) or Gold to help ensure we’re applying the correct handicap
  • Tee Time: every card had the correct tee time. Having your tee time on the card helps to ensure we have all of the cards at the end of the night.
We had a lot of X’s this week!

The League Guide (which Roger has memorized) calls out if you hit the hole max the best you can do is tie the hole (if both you and your playing partner hit the max). Regardless of your handicap. There was one card with a 9 versus a 10. They should have picked up after 8 strokes and called it a tie!

Scoring:  All scores have now been entered and posted to your GHIN.

Metro Seniors Split at Columbia

Playing on a fast course with lightning greens and difficult pins the metro seniors ground their way around the course to 1 W and 1 L.

Brookview Valley took on a solid Greenhaven squad. Jeff Towey, making his first Sr start tied the front 9, but couldn’t gain momentum on the back 9 and dropped the match 1-5.
Veteren Chuck Bernardy also struggled and managed to get shut out. Ramiro Sifuentes dropped the front 9 and managed a split on the back also losing 1-5.
Randy Zejdlik, anchorman, shot a net 78 and managed a sweep of all 6 points. Total was 8-16 loss.

The Golden team took on the undefeated and first place University team. Jim Stetler, making his debut, halved the front 9, won the back and the match by winning 5 of the last 6 holes and took away a 5-1 lead.
Roger Hamm tied the front side by losing #9 and then tied the back side and the match by losing #18 for a 3-3 tie.
Dan Olson, not his normal self, lost 4 of the first 5 holes. He managed to win the first 3 on teh back 9 and secured a 2nd 9 win, but lost the match for a 2-4 loss.
Larry Jocelyn, playing in his second match (first was a 6-0 win), stepped on the gas and never let up. Larry won 6 holes to his opponent’s 2. He walked off with another 6-0 drubbing. Final tally was a 16-8 win over a solid squad.

Valley is in 12th place overall and Golden is in 7th.

WNL Week 4 Recap (5/15/24)

Week 4 is in the books! The greens were rolling fast and the pace continues to be good. It’s hard to believe we’re over 20% of the way through the WNL season. There is still plenty of time for teams to work their way up the standings.

Score Cards: Lots of great looking cards this week! Both low scores (sorry Howie and Richard) and completed fields.

  • Tee Box: We were down to only 2-3 cards that were missing tee box. Continue to mark if you’re playing Blue / White or Gold to help ensure we’re applying the correct handicap
  • Tee Time: Also, down to only 2-3 cards that were missing tee times. In fact, they may have been the same 2-3. Having your tee time on the card helps to ensure we have all of the cards at the end of the night.
  • Hole Max: A reminder, per the League Guide, if you reach 8 strokes and you have not yet holed out, you are to pick up your ball. If this happens (or you concede your hole outside of a given putt) please mark an X on your scorecard for the hole. Metro Seniors enjoy a nice day at Fountain Valley

While no one played their best golf, neither did their opponents so the results were better than last week. The Fountain Valley course was in pretty good spring shape with smooth and quick greens. The top two teams in the league, University and Hiawatha, have a good head start on the rest of the league. There are nine teams within 9 points of each other covering 3rd to 11th place. The BMGA teams are in the middle of that pack.

The Valley Team defeated Valleywood 14-10, led by captain @sheldon-silberman with a sweep of 6 points (while shooting a net 81) with a clutch 35 foot putt from a green side bunker on 18 to 1 foot to push the hole and win the side and match. Chris Gaspard picked up a cool 5 points taking the front nine 2-up and tying the back with a gutsy net par on the 550 yard 15th hole to tie the back nine and staying even through the final three holes. Mark Steinhauser struggled with a net 81 but toughed out 2 points wining the back nine. Chuck Bernardy, shooting two birdies and several pars, matched his opponent with a net 74 but lost the front down 1 and tied the back.

Larry Jocelyn carried the Golden team with a 6 point sweep shooting a net 69 against the Wirth team. Richard Courtney, shooting a net 75 and matched his opponent tying the front and the back for a split of 3 points. Stan Hop had a tough day with a net 81 but was still able to pull off a tie on both the front and back for 3 points. @steve-slivken gave up 8 strokes to his opponent and could just not get a break getting swept for no points. The team tied Wirth 12-12.

The Brookview Golden Team is in 8th placed the Valley Team is in 11th place.

Next Friday is at Columbia. Valley takes on 4th place Greenhaven and Golden plays 1st place University. An opportunity for both teams to move up in the standings.

Week 3 is in the books! Another fantastic afternoon in Golden Valley. Pace felt good on the course! Nice work balancing enjoying the round with keeping things moving.

Rojo Greek Scramble Results

With the help of our great sponsor, Rojo, we were able to add to the pot to make some nice prizes.

It was, in a word, wet. The early tee times had a rough go of it playing several holes in the rain as the course got wetter. The the wind picked up for a while. Scoring conditions were not ideal. Unless of course, you teed off last.
