Golden Team
Golden Team vs Gross (L to R: Hagen, Bialke, Hamm, Slivken)

Wirth Death March

On Friday Metro Seniors played Wirth. We all teed off late because Wirth cannot support 8 minute tee times then nearly the whole league had to skip the 10th hole because we were on pace for a 5:40 round. Worst pace I have seen. The first few groups were fine, then it wasn’t. Wet conditions, lift clean & place and swirling winds were all culprits.

In positive news, the Valley team took on perennial champ and #1 seed University and managed a 12-12 split! Making his first appearance, Doug Giron played as the A player vs League President Skip Schultz. Doug won the front 2 up and held on for dear life on the back 9 to halve the match at 3 each. Dean Penk also won the front 2 up and halved the back 9 (both he and his opponent had 5 straight 5’s to finish). Dean won 5-1. Darin Allen lost the front 9, and held even on the back until 16 & 17 took their tolls and finished with a goose egg. Randy Zedjlik lost the front 1 down then came storming back with wins on #11-#14 to take the back 9 and the overall with a 4-2 total. Well done Valley. I am sure the sportsbooks lost money on you!

Playing just behind Valley was the Golden team versus Gross. In a repeat of last week Slivken/Hamm went out first. Slivken won the opening nine 1 up by winning holes 8 & 9. They were all square on the back until Steve won 14-16 to put the match away with a 6-0 finish. Hamm halved the front 9 via (pick one: Opponent birdieing #9 or Hamm 4 putting #1). The back 9 was even after #14 when Hamm won #15 & #17 to win the second 9 and the total for a 5-1 finish. Jeremy Hagen (another rookie) lost the front 2 down but then won 4 out of the first 5 holes on the back to take the back, but stumbled a bit on the final 4 to lose 3 of those and the match 2-4. Dave Bialke with a great net 73 won the front 2 up, the back 3 up and ran away with all 6. The final was a 19-5 whitewashing.

Golden has now risen from 10th place after week 2 to 3rd place after week 5. In weeks 3-5 they have scored 52 out of 72 points (over 72%) and are 3 points out of 2nd behind Heritage Links.
Valley remains in 9th place.
