Finally a nice, sunny, warm day for our Metro Senior league. Valley hosted the league at Brookview and the course was in pretty good shape considering over three inches of rain fell on the course earlier in the week. Hole #14 was still flooded and played shortened, but the league enjoyed the course and our home team(s) performed well, each winning 16 of 24 points and moving up in the standings. Valley’s captain, Sheldon Silberman, still recovering from a hip replacement acted as starter on the first tee explaining the local rules and the issues on hole #14 to all the golfers as they readied to tee off.
Chuck Bernardy continues to be Valley’s MVP having an average of 5.3 points in four outings! He didn’t shoot net under par like his other three times but his 82 (net 74) was enough to tie the front and win the back (on #18 with a bogey) and the match for 5 points while giving seven strokes. Ben Zurn (net 72) had a great start blowing his opponent away on the front winning 5 up. Unfortunately his opponent woke up shooting a 40 (net 32) and winning the back 2 up. Ben’s great start won the match and 4 points. Darin Allen (net 85) continued his metro senior struggles tying the front for 1 point but loosing the back and the match. Richard Courtney swept his match with a net 70, raising his average to a team high 5.5 points in his second match this season. It was a good day for the host team.
Golden’s Tom Hansen (net 77) won the front by 4 holes, but then started losing holes on the back, but kept it close enough to halve the total, for 3 points. Steve Slivken (net 69!) handily won 3 up on the front and 2 up on the back, for 6 points. Steve was the medalist (low gross, 78) for the day from the short tees (gold.) Roger Hamm (net 68!) had to win 18 to push the back and secure the total for 5 points. If he pushes 18, his opponent wins the back, the total would be a push. 3 points each. If he loses 18, he loses the back and the total for 2 points. Roger put the ball on the green, and 2 putted for a par to win it. 5 points. Captain Dan Olson (net 78) played well enough on the front 9 to win it 3 up. But on the back 9, his opponent came to life, and started winning hole after hole after hole, until on 16, the back and total was lost. 2 points.
Golden moved up to 3rd place, only 5 points out of second but 14 out of 1st place. Valley moved up to 6th place, only 11 behind Golden.
Current Standings This week’s results
Next week we play in the at Hiawatha where Golden takes on the 12th place home team and Valley plays against 11th place Bunker Hills. Looks like a good chance for Golden and Valley to pick up some more points.
