Friday, June 19 started as a very nice morning but got a little drippy with a few showers by late morning. The course is greening up nicely and looked good for the 50+ visitors from around the metro area. The Valley Team captain, Sheldon Silberman acted as starter for all the matches to make sure everyone knew the local rules at Brooky.
Both Valley (13-11) and Golden (14-10) teams won their respective matches against Valleywood and Green Haven demonstrating their local knowledge and competitiveness.
Valley’s Ramiro Sifuentes shot a solid net 74 but was shut out when his opponent shot a net 69. Ben Zurn covered the spread shooting a great net 70 defeating his opponent 3 up on the front and 4 up on the back for 6 points. Ted Roberts (net 78) won the front 2 up but could only hang on to tie the match for 3 points. Jeff Olson (net 74) was solid going 2 up on the front and holding off his opponent to only lose the back 1 down for a match win and 4 points. Valley wins 13-11. Not enough to move up in the standings but signaling life in the ranks! Having just qualified for the seniors due to his recent birthday, Valley has high hopes for Richard Brynteson leading a big comeback.
Golden’s A player, Steve Slivken shot a net 76, and tied his opponent front, back, and total. The match was tied or at most 1-up except one player (Steve) was up by 2 holes one time (after parring and winning 6 and 7); his opponent then parred 8 and 9 to push the front. B player John VonEschen shot a net 71. After being down 3 after 6, John came back, winning 7, 8, and 9 to push the front. All square at the 18th hole, John had to give his opponent a stroke. Somehow his opponent shot a 7, so John’s 5 won the hole, the back, and the total for 5 points. C player Gregg Schaeffer faced a buzz-saw in his opponent to lose the front, back, and total for 0 points. Making his debut appearance this year was D player Mike Deede, who won the front by 1 hole, and then easily won the back, for 6 points. Golden wins 14-10. Jumping up from 11 th place to a tie for 7th.
So what happened to Week 7, you might ask. Play was planned for Wirth but someone failed to secure the reservation so the previous Friday matches were cancelled. The league is contemplating playing these matches in August.
Here are the current standings:

This week Valley takes on 11th place Como and Golden plays 6th place Wirth at Hiawatha.
