All teams need to play. There is a week off between the season and the playoffs. You say you need the rainout date.
No you don’t. Seeding can be points already earned.
Also, non-playoff teams dues are for playing golf, prizes, and entertainment. Why should playoff teams only get that opportunity the last 3 weeks?
The members should have a vote on this?

A group of us were discussing playoffs after the Fall Banquet on Friday, so I am sure the 2024 Board will be looking into this again (2 additional teams were added to the playoffs this year).

Using the off week and having all teams make the playoffs would still end up with 3 weeks with not every team playing, unless you are thinking we fill up/schedule those last 3 weeks for non-advancing teams to play? This will result in an increase of cash needed to pay for 4 additional weeks worth of full tee times – our current 3 week playoffs result in 28 total tee time slots needed, if we go to 4 additional weeks with every team playing that’s 128 tee times to pay for (not to mention the difficulty of reduced daylight). So to support this I believe dues would have to increase or the regular season would have to be shortened which, of course, are options.

Thanks for responding Brad. Shortening the schedule one week would allow everyone in, correct?
To me, the league needs to allow every team to qualify, mainly because the league allows teams to keep…what? 7 or 8 players every year. Cut that back to 6 and you’d see different teams qualify.
    My opinion…for what it’s worth.
Also, I think the added point per match win, should be just 1 added team point.

Please keep sending your opinions (and join the board in 2025, my dude!) – your opinions are worth a lot! Full disclosure: I am not on the board in 2024, I am just-a-guy giving my own opinions here as well. And I may enjoy playing devil’s advocate if you can’t tell.

Your last comment about the added point going to the team – do you mean it should not count towards a players point total (just the team’s overall total)? That’s interesting – do you feel this is too heavily weighted for individual points over the course of the season?

Correct – we could allow all 16 teams in the off week as round 1 of the playoffs (thisis typically the week they aerate, FYI, which I’m sure will not bring up any complaints!). After that, there would still be 3 weeks of playoffs where not all teams are playing. Also…I’m just old and old-fashioned – I like that playoffs are a reward for a strong regular season. However, I understand where you are coming from wanting more (all) teams in there to give everyone a chance at glory. I believe there are cost implications, but will leave that up to smarter folk to look into if needed.

Currently teams can only keep 7 of 12 guys, correct – I guess going to 6 keepers could potentially mix things up to see different teams qualify, but not sure that’s a given. I do know the board is always looking to bring parity and fairness to the league and will continue to do so in 2024. I feel this league does a good job mixing competitive and social/fun aspects well, and know it isn’t easy to do so.

I took a look at the playoff appearances of all teams since 2018 (6 years) and included below – I’m not even sure what kind of story this tells, but here it is:

(Team – # of playoff appearances over 6 years):
    Team 1 – 4 (2018 champs)
    Team 2 – 2 (2019 champs)
    Team 3 – 5
    Team 4 – 2
    Team 5 – 0
    Team 6 – 4 (2023 champs)
    Team 7 – 2
    Team 8 – 0
    Team 9 – 2 (2021 champs)
    Team 10 – 3 (2022 champs)
    Team 11 – 4
    Team 12 – 1
    Team 13 – 4
    Team 14 – 1
    Team 15 – 4 (2020 champs)
    Team 16 – 0

Some more context on what has changed in recent years and topics discussed:
The board did change this past year that you can only keep 6 guys with the assumption the captain would be staying on the team as the 7th. The draft process also changed. After the draft the board looked at how much teams changed year to year. Overall, they stay pretty constant. The conclusion being, guys want to be on a team with their buddies. The discussion has come up many times if we are more of a social league or a competitive league. Social would lean to allow more keepers, competitive would favor more changeover. I think we are 65/35 to the social side.
I looked back at my team which I would say has been very consistent year to year. Over the past 7, I’m the only person who was on the team 7 years ago. Looking back to 2020, 3 guys were on the team then and this past year. (I am one of the 3)
Other discussions have happened around the playoffs.
    16 teams
8 teams with conferences & divisions (This year)
8 teams without conferences & divisions
    6 teams (past years)

Changes to league format and weekend events are the topic of discussion the next two or 3 board meetings before focusing on setting up the league in Feb of 2024. Keep sharing ideas for the board to discuss.

When I started with the BMGA in 2009, only four teams made the playoffs. I think the expansion to eight teams in 2023 is sufficient.

Also, Dan you should run for the Board in the Fall of 2024!
