    I was reading an article about Slugger White – PGA rules official and realized that all these years I had a rule wrong.
    When taking a free drop from a cart path, one does not measure the distance to the nearest point of relief until that spot is indicated on each side of the path. That means the closest point may depend upon you being a righty or a lefty.

    For all those that I steered wrong all these years – I apologize.

    The orange ball in the image below is the one in play.  We take our stance on each side of the path and then measure each way to see which position is closest.  Once that is determined, the drop is made within 1 club length arc of that position.
