ParticipantThe BMGL is a good time. Good camaraderie, good competition & good refreshments.
However, in review of the past 5 years, there have been 3 teams that have never reached the playoffs and 2 teams that have reached the playoffs once. That’s 60 members, each season, who are removed from an opportunity to play for a team championship
.
Summary: This is a proposal to include all teams in the team playoffs.
1. Expand the playoffs to all teams.
Keep the 4 divisions. Division leaders would all split equal money for winning their
division. No conference winners.2. Change the current playoffs schedule to:
Week one: 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15, 3 vs 14, 4 vs 13, 5 vs 12, 6 vs 11, 7 vs 10, 8 vs 9. Board
would determine rankings (end of year point totals, but ties could be head-to-head,
lower team handicap, etc.)
Week two, three, and four: Highest seed vs lowest seed, etc.
This proposal adds an additional week of playoffs. We can keep the 18-week schedule, but we would also play on the week of July 4/other date. There would be NO replays of rainouts. (Rain checks could be issued to playing members)3. Change the team scoring format from individual matches won to team matches
won .
Current format example: Team A has 5 members win their matches 6-4, but the
other 3 members lose their matches 7-3. Team A won 5 out of 8 matches but loses
by points 41-39.
Proposed format example : Team A would get 6 points and Team B, 3 points.
If both teams win 4 matches that night, it would be 4.5-4.5.I have talked about these ideas with several members and there are differing views. Some love the idea, and some feel it’s like “participation points”. We all pay the same amount of full year dues, membership fees, and course fees.
Why would we not allow all teams an opportunity to participate in the playoffs?
I truly enjoy playing with all of you.
Thank you for your consideration,

ParticipantGood to hear other ideas. Here’s my thoughts on your ideas.
1 – I’m good with this
2 – Sure – but could also go with keeping Conferences and then have 1v8, 2v7… in each one with Conference winners playing.
3 – Not as excited about this one. The problem is that if you get up or down early then a match can be over by the 6th or 7th hole and give no incentive to play in the last holes.
If I could add one – I’d love to see us eliminate league dues going to the year end banquet. If people want to attend a banquet let them pay for it out of their own pocket instead of having my fees fund it. If we need more money for expanded playoffs this can pay for it.

Richard BryntesonKeymasterThanks for the feedback. We will bring it to the board. There are some issues with over expanding the playoffs with weeks of play, shortened day light, etc. Also dues are based on the playoff schedule so keeping the same number of weeks of play and increasing players, would increase due. But I agree we could expand another wild card or potentially one addition week to increase the number of teams. It’s a fair point.
Also, we are going to increase the number of players a team has to drop, to increase movement of players between teams which should increase who does and doesn’t make the playoffs.
As always, keep the ideas coming, we talked through all ideas, no matter how crazy. I love crazy ideas.

Richard BryntesonKeymasterDan one clarification. Are you suggesting that we do a win/lose per week. So instead of points, it’s a win/loss like the NFL.

ParticipantRichard, Yes. If your team won more matches that week, that would be a win.
As far as expanding to 16 teams, one extra week is all that’s needed. We have two open weeks now, July 8. & Sept. 7 this year.$20 extra in dues for all teams to play seems doable.

ParticipantThe open weeks are there for help with rain outs. Granted if every team makes the playoff, the value of holding a spot for rainouts doesn’t matter.
July 4th week is mainly there due to people being at cabins and historically teams won’t have enough players in town that week to play. In 2026 the 4th will be on a weekend and we could have a decent chance at using both the Wed before and after the 4th for league play.
I’m not a fan of the entire league making the playoffs. Adding two more teams and removing the bye week for the conference champs could make sense as it keeps the overall schedule the same, and with a potential 8 teams in the first week of playoffs its half of the league which will allow for plenty of time relative to sunset.
Moving to individual win-loss scoring instead of points is interesting. Twice this season a team won 5 matches but lost the week. The losing team got 39 pts and 38.5 points in those two weeks.

ParticipantAnd this scenario…A team could win 6 matches and end up tied. 40-40.
Team A = 6 wins at 5-4 (30 + 6 = 36) & 2 losses at 2-7 (4).6 wins out of 8 and you tie……and heaven forbid those Team A 2 losses are 1-8. Then Team A loses.
I still like 16 teams in. We don’t need makeups on rainouts. Those players can get a nine-hole rain check, if they want one.
