The forecast for Week 5 WNL was cloudy, rainy with a touch of thunder and lightning. Instead, the clouds parted and almost all of the lightning strikes came from Team CTB, which all landed squarely on Team Range Balls. CTB took home a whopping 52 points, beating the league’s previous single week high mark of 49.5 set back in week 1 by WTF. While Range Balls could only muster 27 points, a new single week low. CTB moved up an amazing 7 spots from 12th to 5th and are only 10.5 points out of first. Range Balls dropped from 6th to 13th. There was another lightning strike that came shooting out of Doug Maday’s bag in the form of a 110 yard one-hopper deuce on the par four 11th hole. Resting against the pin in two should qualify as the “closest to the pin in two” unless one can find a way to embed the ball inside the flag. Adam Justin (Doug’s opponent) certainly tried, hitting line drives on the next two holes, that likely put a small dent in each of the flag sticks.
Young Gunz pulled out another 44.5 points, which marks the third week in a row they’ve met or exceeded that total. They jumped from 5th to 2nd and are only 7 points back from 1st. However, powerhouse Drawshank Redemption hauled in a modest 40.5 points, which was good enough to expand their Week 4 lead of 5.5 points up to 7 points after Week 5. With only three weeks remaining in the first half of the season, they are trying to take it wire-to-wire. Rounding out the top three is Six Pack, earning 37 points this week, dropping them from 2nd to 3rd.
The Two Man Low Net game achieved new levels of low this week. Taking home 1st position was Don Grove & Steve Latham, pulling in a 65 on the front nine and beating out the next best by 3 shots. The only forecast that was proven accurate this week was the one that had Hoffman and/or Supalla taking home the low gross. They both decided to fire a 34 on the front, however Howie did it in style with 4 birdies and a double bogie on the par 3 8th. They beat out their closest competitors by 2, Meder and Mueller, who both shot 36.
The four flag events on the front nine had many reoccurring names. Hoffman and Mueller both took hole 1, only to be ousted by Supalla in the end. No one dared challenge Hoffman’s closest to on hole 4. Mueller tried again on hole 9 with the long putt, but enter Chas Puntillo, who decided to take both hole 8 and 9 for himself. On the back, Kyle Haab had it to about 4 feet on hole 11 until Maday one-hopped it into the hole. The very next player to hit in Maday’s group put it to about 2 feet. Poor Alex Wheeler didn’t even get to write his name on the card… but great shot anyway. Stacy Sundet got to write his name on holes 12 & 17, but Ward Eames stole it on 12 and Meder had a near ace on 17 to about 18 inches… and yes, I putt it out for those of you in the birdie bet. Pula hauled in hole 18’s long putt.
