Golden Sneaks Past Valley in a productive last week of the Twin Cities Metro League regular season

Brookview Golden hosted the Twin Cities Metro Senior League at Brookview this past week. The course was in great shape and the home teams played pretty well. Valley stopped the Gross team from advancing with a 12-12 tie, sticking them in a three-way tie for 3rd place. Golden defeated Daytona 14-10 pulling them out of the top 5 into 7th place. Only a little more than 20 points separate both our teams from first place.

This week, Ted Roberts led the way for the Valley team losing the front nine but picking it up on the back with a 45 (net 38) winning the back and the match for 4 points. Jeff Towey shot a great 39 (net 34) on the front but was not able to keep up the pace and tied the back and the match. Dean Penk shot a disappointing net 80 but still was able to take advantage of the home course and win the back nine for 2 points. Emmy Yates came through with 3 points winning the front and tying the match. Valley tied the match 12-12 but fell to 13th place.

Golden team captain, Roger Hamm captured 5 points with a net 73 in a tight match. Playing partner Mike Deed also shot a net 73 and picked up 5 points in another tight match. The C/D group didn’t fare quite as well as Steve Couture shot a net 75 and won the back nine with a par on $#18 to gain 2 points. Dan Olson shot a net 36 on the front but it took a par on #9 to beat his opponent that he was giving 13 strokes. Dan hung in there but lost the match and the back on #18. Golden beat Daytona 14-10 and finished the regular season 1 point ahead of Valley.

Current Standings  This week’s results

Next week we play at Oak Marsh (hosted by Braemar) in the final week of the league, known as the position round. The top five teams are within 10 points of each other so this will be really important for them as anyone could end up on top. Golden plays 11th place Braemar and Valley takes on last place Como.
