It was 44 degrees, drizzling and windy – a typical April start to the Metro Senior League hosted at Gross National. Things warmed up and blue skies prevailed by the end of the round and the course was in excellent early spring shape. The Valley team, captained by Sheldon Silberman, was led by Jeff Towey, sweeping his match for all six points with a net 70 in tough conditions. His playing partner, Dean Penk kept his match close right to the last hole but was only able to squeak out 1 point with a tie on the back 9 with a net 74 while his opponent garnered a net 72. Either Sheldon nor his playing partner Dave Schoeller adjusted well to the conditions. Both came up short giving up strokes to their opponents and loosing by nearly 10 strokes each. No points for triple-digit gross scores so the team left with a 17-7 shellacking, leaving them in 12th place.
The Golden team, captained by Dan Olson faired much better. Jim Sanford squeaked out a tie on the front 9 for 1 point with a net 79. But playing partner Steve Slivken, getting one stroke per side, won the front and tied the back to walk away with 5 points on a net 77. Steve Couture scared away his opponent (no-show) and played the card wining the front and tying the back for a total of 5 points. New comer Tom Aamot had a great inaugural round shooting a net 71 to his opponent’s net 76, wining the front, tying the back, and winning the match for 5 points. Golden lands tied in 3rd place after week one with a 16-7 victory.
