BMGA Metro Senior Teams Advance, thanks in part to Dan Olson’s Ace

On a muggy, but not oppressively hot Friday, the matches played at Como were very competitive.

Golden took on Wirth and the results were impressive.  Coming into today’s matches, University seemed out of reach, Golden’s thoughts were to be a solid 2nd place team.  University was playing Heritage Links, so how badly would they want University to beat them, to be safely in 2nd place, or should they seriously challenge University for the top prize?  In the end, the team acquired 20 points, but University also crushed Heritage (not quite 20), so It seems Golden has 2nd place locked up (for now).

John Von Eschen (net 73) was able to prevail on the front by one hole (having to give strokes on 7, 8, and 9).  On the back, it was down to the last hole, which both players parred to push, so John got 5 points.  Steve Slivken (net 71) lost the front but won the back by a sufficient number of holes to also win the total for 4 points.  Dan Olson (net 68) pushed the front, but had a solid back nine (including a birdie on 11, and an ace on 13) for 5 points.  And Chris Gaspard (net 70) crushed his opponent, front, back, and total, for 6 points.

So Golden is solidly in 2nd place, only 15 points behind University, with 2 weeks to go.

Valley did not fair quite as well against Hiawatha garnering only 10 points. However, due to the shellacking Golden put on Wirth, Valley still moved up one place to sixth. There are six teams within 10 points of each other from sixth to 12th place. With 24 points up for grabs in each of the next two weeks, anything could happen.

Team stall worth Chuck Bernardy (net 70) had another excellent round wining the front and the match for 4 points. The usually solid Dean Penk came up short (net 76) and was skunked. Richard Courtney (net 82) kind of wore down in the heat tying the front and losing the match for only 1 point. But Randy Zejdlik (net 77) came through tying the front but cleaning up on the back for the match and 5 points.

Current Standings  This week’s results

Next week we play at Brookview where the Golden hosts the league and takes on 12th place Como and Valley plays 3rd place Columbia.
