Valley team C/D match against Columbia

Metro Senior Teams hold their positions going into final week

Finally a great day for golf – except for the smoke, and well, some pretty disgusting fairways from all the rain during July. Both the Golden Team (2nd place) and Valley Team (sixth place) from the BMGA held their positions in the 14 team league with only one week to go. Golden had a tough 13-11 win and Valley, facing stiff competition from many teams just below them in the standings soundly defeated third place Columbia 18-6 dropping them to 5th place. That means Valley will play Columbia again and Golden will play University (1st place) next week in the final position round.

Valley had a pretty successful set of matches yesterday at Brookview against Columbia.  The win was led by Jeff Towey with a gross 77 (net 74 from the Gold tees) for all 6 points. Towey was lights out with a 35 on the back 9! Richard Courtney (net 77) and captain Sheldon Silberman (net 75) each collected 5 points with a three-point swing possible for both on the last hole.  Looking back, it was team Captain Silberman’s 60+ foot putt on 11 for par and a tie that won his match. If not for that fortuitous putt the match would have been over sooner. Doug Giron (net 73) had a slow start loosing the front down four. He almost came back winning the back up 3 but was only able to get 2 points.  All-in-all, Valley garnered 18 points but were only able to maintain their 6th place position as they were some other rather unbalanced scores between many other teams.

Host Golden’s A/B team of late season addition John Von Eschen (net 70) and Paul Yakshe (net 74) each swept their matches and things were looking very good. Von Eschen was steady winning both the front and back up 1 against a very competent opponent shooting a net 72. Yakshe kept steady pressure on the front and won up 1 but took off on the back as his opponent faded winning 4&3. However, Roger Hamm was swept (net 75) by an opponent shooting a net 65! Geez! Bob Boufford (net 78) played well enough for a tie on the front for 1 point but was unable to defeat his opponent who shot a net 72 with 4 pars and a birdie on the back.

Current Standings  This week’s results

Next week is position week hosted by Braemar at Oak Marsh. Golden needs to beat University by a score of at least 21 of the available 24 points to overtake University for 1st place. They also need to stay ahead of Heritage links who are 10 points behind them. Valley has close pursuers at 3 and 6 points behind them so the best way to go is to defeat Columbia by at least 16 points and take over 5th place.
