Metro Seniors Tighten up the Whole League

Even though they lost 13-11, The Valley team held the first place Fountain Valley team to a very limited victory allowing the rest of the field to advance in the standings. The top three teams are within 9 points and the Brookview Golden Team is in 4th place, only 19 points behind.

Starting on the back nine at Green Haven Golf Club, the Valley team got going with Chuck Bernardy winning the back 2-up but Ted Roberts losing down 1. Bernardy was down 2 after four holes but struggled back to even before playing the last hole badly losing down one but winning the match for 4 points. Roberts was going strong, up-2 until he blew up on number 7 and his opponent birdied #8, tying the front nine for 1 point. Captain Sheldon Silberman came to play shooting a net 67. He took the back nine 4-up shooting a 41 with a birdie lob wedge over the water on #18 to 4 feet and finished the front nine with 195 yard shot to middle of the green on 9 and settled for a tap in par to win the hole and garner all 6 points. Dan Peters saw the other side of the coin with his opponent shooting a net 70 for the second week in a row. Dan shot a respectable net 75 but was skunked leaving the team with an 11-13 loss.

The Golden team played Gross and booked a nice 15-9 win on a beautiful day for golf.  Team captain Roger Hamm struggled on the front shooting a 47 and going down by 2 but came roaring back with a 37 and wining the back 2-up for a 3 point tie on the match. A nice looking net 72. Playing partner Mike Deede had a rout going taking the front 4-up until his opponent roared back with a 4-up win on the back leaving Mike with a 3 point tie for the match. Steve Shellenbaum matched Roger’s net 72 but was able to squeak out a 1-up win on the front and then shot lights out on the back with 40 and won the back 4-up and took all six points. Chris Gaspard finally put some points on the board matching his opponent shot for shot and tying the front and the back and the match for 3 points and the team win. 

Golden is now in 4th place and 10 points out of third.  
Valley moved out the basement to 12th place, but just 10 points out of 9th.

Next Friday is at Valleywood. Valley takes on 7th place Green Haven and Golden plays 2nd place University – a BIG match.
