Well, despite the drought, it had to happen sooner or later. The Lightning warning system went into alarm at 5:45 and we had to clear the golf course. Neither the Club or the City control this system. When the system detects a lightning threat for the course, the alarm is sounded and not cleared until the threat is gone and remains gone for 15 minutes. The board met and decided we could wait until 7 PM to restart play. Unfortunately, the all clear came about 15 minutes late. We are up against darkness and it would have been tough for the final groups to complete their rounds by the 8:55 PM sunset.
If a substantial number of players are on the course, the BMGA is still responsible for and pays for the rounds, whether they are completed or not. That was the case last night. However, we did drink a lot of beer and ate a lot of food!
At this point, there are no plans for a makeup week. Next week are division matches. Those of you that finished, or nearly finished nine holes should post your score.
For future reference:
- The Brookview Golf Course posted rules require you to immediately stop play, mark your ball and return to the shelter of the clubhouse if the alarm sounds. There is a siren and flashing light near the 10th hole and on top of the club house. If you continue to play you risk injury.
- If any individual in your foursome feels unsafe and wants to return, you foursome play is suspended.
- The BMGA rules require you to remain at the course until we either return to play or cancel the night. If you leave the course and we return to play, you forfeit any holes not completed.
- Additionally, if darkness prevents a group from completing play, we have in the past decided to halve the remaining holes for all players as a means to complete the league night.
