WNL Week 8 Recap (6/12/24)

Back to back weeks dodging the weather to get all of the rounds in.

Hole in One Alert: Shout out to Richard Brynteston on your Hole in One earlier this week! While it didn’t happen at Brookview or a BMGA event (the hole in one pot remains above $5k) it’s still quite the accomplishment!

BMGA @ the US Open: Brooky Strong is making a push to get trending during the US Open this weekend. BMGA alumni Craig Wethington will be sitting behind the 17th green Saturday yelling “Brooky Strong” after the first putt of each golfer who either has the lead or tied for the lead when playing 17. Follow along on their Instagram (@brookystrong) and show your support! With only 3 followers currently, they’re going to need some help to get trending…

Score Cards: We slipped a bit this week on the Tee Box being filled out correctly.

  • Tee Box: Continue to mark if you’re playing Blue / White or Gold to help ensure we’re applying the correct handicap
  • Handicaps: Had a few handicaps that didn’t quite match. Once again remember to check you and your playing opponents handicap to ensure they’re up to date.
  • Total Score: When adding up your totals don’t feel shy in using the calculator on your phone.
    • There are a handful of cards each week where the 9-hole scores is off a stroke or 2…
    • While the computer “does the math” having the total score is helpful to ensure the numbers were entered correctly into the computer.

Scoring:  All scores have now been entered and posted to your GHIN.

WNL Week 7 Recap (6/5/24)

Despite the lightning, hail, and downpour, all groups were able to finish their rounds and I didn’t hear of anyone using their putter as a lightning rod. I was also pleasantly surprised how dry the cards were kept.

Score Cards: Score card commentary is being minimized based on performance. Keep doing the following:

  • Ensure your tee time is on the card
  • Check handicaps before teeing off
  • Fill out the tee box field with either Blue/White (B/W M) or Gold (G)
  • When adding up your totals don’t feel shy in using the calculator on your phone.
    • There are a handful of cards each week where the 9 hole scores is off a stroke or 2…
    • While the computer “does the math” having the total score is helpful to ensure the numbers were entered correctly into the computer.

Scoring:  All scores have now been entered and posted to your GHIN.

Week 6 WNL Recap (5/29)

Brookview was looking lush and green on Week 6, but WNL dodged the rain for another beautiful night in Golden Valley.

Score Cards: Scorecards were good, with only 1 card missing the tee box. Looking to eliminate this section of the recap going forward.

  • Hole Max: A reminder, per the League Guide, if you reach 8 strokes and you have not yet holed out, you are to pick up your ball. If this happens (or you concede your hole outside of a given putt) please mark an X on your scorecard for the hole. This is new for this year and helps scorekeeping in Golf Genius. It is also in line with the new USGA handicap guidelines for holes that are not finished.

The League Guide (which Roger has memorized) calls out if you hit the hole max the best you can do is tie the hole (if both you and your playing partner hit the max). Regardless of your handicap.

Food Specials: Week 6 was the first night of the new 316 WNL food specials.

  • Each week there will be one $10 food option.
  • It will rotate between:
    • BLT w/ chips (5/29, 6/19, etc…)
    • Boneless Wing Basket (6/5, 6/26, etc..)
    • Wrap w/ chips (6/12, 7/10, etc…)

Scoring:  All scores have now been entered and posted to your GHIN.

WNL Week 4 Recap (5/15/24)

Week 4 is in the books! The greens were rolling fast and the pace continues to be good. It’s hard to believe we’re over 20% of the way through the WNL season. There is still plenty of time for teams to work their way up the standings.

Score Cards: Lots of great looking cards this week! Both low scores (sorry Howie and Richard) and completed fields.

  • Tee Box: We were down to only 2-3 cards that were missing tee box. Continue to mark if you’re playing Blue / White or Gold to help ensure we’re applying the correct handicap
  • Tee Time: Also, down to only 2-3 cards that were missing tee times. In fact, they may have been the same 2-3. Having your tee time on the card helps to ensure we have all of the cards at the end of the night.
  • Hole Max: A reminder, per the League Guide, if you reach 8 strokes and you have not yet holed out, you are to pick up your ball. If this happens (or you concede your hole outside of a given putt) please mark an X on your scorecard for the hole. WNL Week 3 Recap (5/8/2024)

Week 3 is in the books! Another fantastic afternoon in Golden Valley. Pace felt good on the course! Nice work balancing enjoying the round with keeping things moving.

Areas of improvement:

  2. Handicaps: Continue to check your and your opponent’s handicap prior to teeing off.
    1. Your handicap on the Front 9 and Back 9 may be different.
  3. Tee Time: Please complete this field, it helps us ensure we have all of the cards in hand.

Scorecard Hall of Shame (First Nominee):

  • First and Last names are helpful to have on the card to ensure scores are assigned to the right person.
  • Teammates should either both be on the top or both be on the bottom for recording matches.
  • Tee box should either be Member (Blue / White) or Gold. The card already says Front 9 on the top.
  • Other than these 3 areas, this card is perfectly filled out and legible. Close to Hall of Fame material!

WNL Week 1 Recap (4/24/24)

Week 1 is in the books and the weather conditions could not have been better!

NOTE FROM RICHARD: We have confirmed that when posting the 9-hole scores from Golf Genius you CANNOT add stats after the fact in the GHIN App. However, it does work for 18-hole rounds (i.e. Weekend Tournaments). Golf Genius is aware of this, working on an update but we do not have a timeline yet. I apologize for misspeaking about this as the 18-hole vs 9-hole limitation wasn’t listed in their support documents.

Scoring: Thank you all for your patience as we worked through some of the kinks in our new league scoring system. All scores have now been entered and posted to your GHIN.

Housekeeping Items:

  • Pace of Play: We averaged 2:20 – 2:30.
    • Continue reminding your team and playing partner to play ready golf and putt out when on the green.
  • Scorecards: Scorecard hygiene was mostly good, but there were some ugly ones…
    • Confirm your handicap using the GHIN app before teeing off.
      • We had 7 incorrect handicaps this week. GHIN and Golf Genius are our source of truth for handicaps, not the scorecard.
      • You may want to check your playing partners handicap as well…
  • Tee field: Should be either BW or Gold.
    • If we don’t know you played on the gold tees, we’re assuming you were on the Blue / White if it is not filled in.
  • Scoring: These fields are separated by matches not by teams.
    • Example: You and your opponent should be on the top 2 lines. Your partner and their opponent should be on the bottom 2 lines.
  • Completeness: Need card filled out completely. team numbers, handicaps, gross scores, match points
    • This is used to validate data entry into Golf Genius
  • Other Stats: For ease of legibility, the official card should not include anything other than the fields that are on there.
    • Circles for wins and dots for handicap holes are acceptable.
    • If people want to keep track of net points, how much they’re up down, etc…  use a separate card for that.
  • This is what good looks like. We may start a “Hall of Shame” for ugly cards going forward.
