The Weekly Rant

New Member Welcome: Jimmy Buckingham joined the WNL replacing an injured player on the Zed Heads. Welcome Jimmy!

Reminders

  1. Future Hole Closures: We have now had two hole closures during WNL play. If there are future closures, holes will continue to be “halved” so players should write down scores that will ensure a halving of the hole.  For example, Player A is getting a stroke. Player A writes down a 5 and Player B writes down a 4. If there is stroke index differential on the closed hole, players can agree on what score to enter taking into account current handicap, playing conditions, etc.”
  2. If an issue arises on the course during WNL play that could impact the results of your match, please bring the matter to the WNL Director’s (or other BMGA Board Member) attention so we can try to resolve it right away.
  3. Pace of Play is critical to the enjoyment of all. Ready golf is strongly encouraged!
  4. If you move a Prize Pin on the green, please be sure to move it back to its original position so the correct WNL member is awarded the much coveted BMGA Chits.

Handicaps

  • Please post your scores for WNL as they are not entered by the BMGA or Brookview.  Sandbaggers are not appreciated.
  • The WNL Director is not responsible for checking the accuracy of the player’s handicap on the scorecards. Check the GHIN App before teeing off to get your current handicap and adjust it to the Side (Front or Back) and Tees (Member or Gold).

Scorecards

  • Scorecards should not be altered after being submitted without all impacted players agreeing to any changes to the results.  If agreement cannot be reached, the issue should be brought to the attention of the WNL Director of other BMGA Board Member.
  • Scorecards should be signed by at least one player from each team.
  • Listing of tee times, team numbers and poor addition are ongoing deficiencies.  Come on guys!
  • If someone concedes a hole, please mark an “X.”  This is especially important when both players score a 9 but the hole is conceded by the player who picks up their ball first.

Brookview 2022 Irrigation Project

The following post will be updated as we are made aware of changes on the course with regards to the 2022 Irrigation Project.

Background: The inground irrigation at Brookview is nearly 40 years old. The course made the decision to replace the entire system (regulation and par 3) with a new product. Notable changes include: no more sprinkler heads in the fairways or tee boxes, greens will have two sets – one dedicated to the green and one to the rough, and overall better coverage of the course.

The project is starting in April of 2022 and expected to end in late July / early August.

The BMGA has a local rule for Abnormal Course Conditions for WNL as seen below. Irrigation equipment and the damage done as part of the installation of new or removal of old is considered an Abnormal Course Condition and the player is entitled to free relief for Ball, Swing, Stance, or Line of Play.

Abnormal Course Conditions not marked

  • If a ball comes to rest in or on an area that appears to be Abnormal Course Condition (formally known as Ground under Repair), but is not clearly marked as such, relief may be taken provided the player and his competitor agree that the area is warranted for relief.
  • The ball may be lifted, without penalty, cleaned and dropped as near as possible to the spot where it lay but not nearer the hole.  A ball in the fairway may be dropped in the fairway, a ball outside the fairway must stay outside the fairway.  This rule is not applicable to balls inside a penalty area.
  • This rule is intended for areas of the course that are currently under maintenance by grounds crew, drainage, or irrigation work. This local rule is not designed for areas of the course with poor surfaces, poor grass, etc.

August 17 Update – Hole #10 – Gold Tees will be moved up close to the beginning of the fairway.

August 10 Update – Driving Range will be closed. Putting Green between the Driving Range and #1 Tee will also likely be closed.

July 27 Update – Hole #11 will be shortened and play as a Par 3. Member and Gold tee boxes will be located about 175 yards from the middle of the green.

July 20 Update – Hole #12 will be shortened with the teeing area on the other side of the pond.

July 13 Update – Hole #4 will be closed. Players should proceed to Hole #5 and continue their match.

June 29 Update – Hole #10 will be closed. Players should proceed to Hole #11 to begin their match. The Member Tee Box on Hole #3 will be moved up to where the Gold/Red Tee Box is located.

June 15 Update – Hole #1 will be closed. Players should proceed to Hole #2 to begin their match.

May 18 Update – Crews have finished laying the initial pipe on #1 and #2. Remember that if a sod seam impacts your ball lie, swing or stance you can take free relief for abnormal course conditions.

April 25 Update – Due to construction and maintenance, the Driving Range is closed from April 25th and will reopen on April 29th.

April 22 Update – Starting the week of April 25th, pipes and other construction equipment will be placed on certain holes for the installation of the primary pipe that runs around the course. Ground is scheduled to be broken the first week of May.

Brookview Metro Senior teams hold steady against the field

After a few years of no league play, Columbia hosted this weeks Metro Seniors golf league. Having closed several holes for some public works construction, the course is back and in great shape. Everyone reported the greens were in great shape and the weather couldn’t have been better.

The Valley team won their match 16-8 over 9th place Bunker Hills. Both @Marty-Mangold and @Larry-Larson garnered all six points in their matches – Marty with a net 69 and Larry with a net 74. @Ted-Roberts shot a 37 (net 30!) on the front with two birdies to take 2 points but couldn’t beat his opponent’s 41 (net 34) on the back. @Ramiro-Sifuentes came out hot shooting a 38 on the front to get the first two points but fell flat on the back loosing the nine and the match. (Rumor has it he was anxious to make his massage appointment downtown and the match was dragging along and he lost focus!)  The 16 points won by Valley were the second most of any team this week – competition has tightened up between the teams with almost half the teams ending in tie matches.

The Golden Team couldn’t repeat their magic from last week losing 9-15 to Greenhaven.  @Curtis-Medina led the team getting all 6 points with steady play over a struggling opponent. @Doug-Diedrich had a great front nine wining the last 5 holes to take the first 2 points. Unfortunately, his opponent woke up on the back and won the first six holes for the match and and 4 points. @Mark-Steinhauser tied his opponent on the front to take 1 point. His opponent beat him by one stroke on the back. Unfortunately @Forrest-Nelson shot a decent net 74 but gave 5 strokes to a guy who shot a net 68! Forest was blanked.

Half way through the season, Valley is still in 6th place, only 2 points out of 5th and 6 points out of 4th. Golden dropped to 8th, only 9 points behind Valley.

Next week we play at Fountain Valley where Golden takes on 12th place Valleywood and Valley plays 13th place Hiawatha. This should be a chance to make a move back towards the top for both teams.

To find out more on the league, see Sheldon or Roger.

Scorecards

  • After seven weeks of play, some scorekeepers still can’t fill in their TEE TIME. “Really”
  • Players from two teams forgot what team they played on. (Two Cards = four players on each). Kudos for including your handicaps.
  • One player wrote down a 14 for a score.  The max score on a hole is 9!!!! (As in Nine). No wonder it takes us more than 2.5 hours to complete 9 holes 🙁

Brookview Golden hosts Metro Seniors

The Valley team halved their match 12-12 with Valleywood last Friday. Captain  @Sheldon-Silberman and @Larry-Larson both posted nice net 73’s and came away with a great 11 of 12 points in their two matches. This is the 2nd straight net 73 by Sheldon. On the other card, @Ramiro-Sifuentes and @Dean-Penk both shot net 78’s, but could only manage 1 point combined.

The Golden Team coming off a 2 week free fall woke up from their coma and beat first place Wirth 16-8. @Stan-Hop posted a great net 69 and won 5 points – 1 of those points by virtue of a birdie chip on on #17 from near the #8 flowerbed, sending shock & awe through the league. @Daniel-Peters shot a nice net 72 and swept his opponent 6-0. @Gary-Ridout got off to a hot start, then hit the skids on the back 9. He found a way to win the match and got 4 of the 6 points. @Gary-Scharmer shot a net 75 but only could get 1 point.

With the new point totals, Valley is now in 6th place and Golden is tied for 7th. Through 6 weeks, just 2 points separate the teams.
Next week we play at Columbia where Golden takes on T7 Greenhaven and Valley plays 9th place Bunker Hills. The Columbia match will mark the half way point of the league.
