Paquette nets Ace in Metro Seniors!

On Friday at Como, Doug Paquette, playing for the Valley team, lined up on the 158 yard 6th hole one down and with one swing made the match even. Congrats Doug! (This is Doug’s 3rd ace, but the only one he has seen go in)

Doug’s opponent gets a birdie and loses the hole.

Unfortunately, for Valley this was by far the best news of the day as the struggles continue. As a team they recorded 8 of the 24 points, and 5 of those by the net 67 of Richard Courtney . Greg Donahue grabbed 2 on the front 9 but lost the back and the match, and the only other point was by Doug who split the back and got 1. Ramiro, in a tight match, was shut out.

The Golden team led the league in points this week with 18-6 win over Bunker Hills. No one lost a match in a great team effort. Tom Hansen split his match and got 3 points. Jim Sanford grabbed 5 of the 6, Stan Hop won the front 9 easily and his opponent walked off, leaving Stan to play the back versus net par. Stan stuck it out and got all 6 points. Lastly, Dan Olson lost the front 9 3 down and won the back 9 4 up to win 4 of 6.

Standings : Valley remains in last place with 2 weeks left but are only 2 points out of 12th. Golden moved up once spot to 4th, 6 points from 3rd place and just 2 ahead of 5th. Weekly results

WNL Week 13 Results (7/26/23)

It was a tough night with the heat and dew point in the 70’s but the league persevered in another round of Division play. The only changes in standings were in the BCC South division where CTB moved up to 2nd place and GVC East where Range Balls slid up to second. The GVC West division remains the strongest group where the last place team would be 2nd place in either of the BCC divisions yet they are 35 points below the league leader Team Hack Attack that has 513 points.

Peter Crane maintains the lead for our WNL MVP leader with 63.5 points, just ahead of the surging Ramiro Sifuentes. The top 12 qualify for the season-ending Shootout.

Shout out to Randy Zjedlik with a net 0 on #8 (Birdie with two strokes!)

Remember:

  • If you are not scheduled to golf on any particular night, we can use you as a spotter or ranger. It can help with pace of play.   To spot, just report to the pro shop and let them know and you’ll get a cart and flags for marking the ball. Common holes for spotting are #2, #3, #14, and #16. Or you can range around helping the groups that are slow catch up.

Weekly WNL Director Stats

  • Legibility was pretty good this week. Here is a listing of the the problems that slow down score entry:
    • Number cards without finish time: Front: 1, Back: 1
    • Cards with folds across scores: Front: 8, Back: 2
    • Cards with missing or addition errors: Front: 2, Back: 4
    • Cards missing or wrong team numbers or full names: Front: 0, Back: 1
    • Starting Tee times were on 32 of 32 matches. (Please enter the scheduled tee time, not your actual time to tee off.)
  • Pace of play – The front finished in 2:30 – but was running at closer to 2:40 most of the way. The back finished in 2:30 minutes – typical. Keep working on it and keep your foursome on the heals of the group in front of you – everyone will appreciate your efforts! Thanks for all the volunteer spotters and rangers this week – volunteer if you can!
  • Several of you voiced your concerns over the slow pace on the front. The first group was slowed by the public in front of them. They finished in 2:10. The third and fourth groups had some high scores and finished in the 2:20 range so I thought I would do a little trivia calculation. The fastest group on the entire course made one stroke every 40.5 seconds, on average. The slowest group on the front (2:47) completed a stroke every 53.3 seconds. The highest stroke card had a stroke every 47.6 seconds. The lowest stroke card had an average of 69.4 seconds. Draw your own conclusions!

Weekly Reminders

  1. If an issue arises on the course during WNL play that may impact the result of a match, please bring the matter to the WNL Director’s (or other BMGA Board Member) attention so we can try to resolve it right away.
  2. If you are in the last group (6 PM tee time) please collect the on course flags when you leave the hole and put them in the bucket on the deck at the end of your round.
  3. Post your score! (The league does not post for you). We highly recommend hole-by-hole posting as it does a better job of calculating your proper ESC score.

Scorecards

  • Please enter both the match start time and end time in the space provided. Make sure every bank on the card is filled in.
  • Scorecards should be signed by at least one player from each team.
  • Please don’t fold the card where scores are entered – this really impacts legibility.
  • If someone concedes a hole, please mark an “X.”  This is especially important when both players score a 9 but the hole is conceded by the player who picks up their ball first.

Metro Senior Teams mauled at Valleywood

Valleywood, down by the Minnesota Zoo, proved grizzly for both teams.

The Golden Team, after rising to 4th place last week got bitten by 2nd place University. Long story short, Hamm got 0 points, Slivken got 2 off the league President Schultz, Dan Olson shot a net 69 and still only got 2 points and Gary Scharmer got 2. That is a 6-18 loss dropping Golden to a T5 (with Braemar) position in the league.

The Valley team, after finally getting out of the cellar last week was fleeced by Greenhaven 5-19. Sifuentes, coming off his MPGA Sr. threepeat got 4 of the 5 team points by way of his net 76. Bernardy got the only other team point by halving the back 9. Steve Susich and Doug Diedrich both were shut out. The 5 point total drops Valley right back into the cellar. Greenhaven was a big mover, jumping 3 positions to 4th place in the league

Next week marks the 2nd to last regular season week and is at Como. Golden takes on 12th place Bunker Hills and Valley tackles host 11th place Como. Lets hope we don’t have another animalistic outing!

WNL Week 12 (7/19/23) CANCELLED

Well, despite the drought, it had to happen sooner or later. The Lightning warning system went into alarm at 5:45 and we had to clear the golf course. Neither the Club or the City control this system. When the system detects a lightning threat for the course, the alarm is sounded and not cleared until the threat is gone and remains gone for 15 minutes. The board met and decided we could wait until 7 PM to restart play. Unfortunately, the all clear came about 15 minutes late. We are up against darkness and it would have been tough for the final groups to complete their rounds by the 8:55 PM sunset.

If a substantial number of players are on the course, the BMGA is still responsible for and pays for the rounds, whether they are completed or not. That was the case last night. However, we did drink a lot of beer and ate a lot of food!

At this point, there are no plans for a makeup week. Next week are division matches. Those of you that finished, or nearly finished nine holes should post your score.

For future reference:

  • The Brookview Golf Course posted rules require you to immediately stop play, mark your ball and return to the shelter of the clubhouse if the alarm sounds. There is a siren and flashing light near the 10th hole and on top of the club house. If you continue to play you risk injury.
  • If any individual in your foursome feels unsafe and wants to return, you foursome play is suspended.
  • The BMGA rules require you to remain at the course until we either return to play or cancel the night. If you leave the course and we return to play, you forfeit any holes not completed.
  • Additionally, if darkness prevents a group from completing play, we have in the past decided to halve the remaining holes for all players as a means to complete the league night.

None – league cancelled

Brookview continues dominate play in MPGA Seniors.

The Minnesota Public Golf Association held it’s annual Senior Championship at a difficult Keller this past weekend (7/15-16) and Brookview again shined. Full results here (spoiler alert)

In the 65+ Division, Larry Hahka makes an appearance on a course he has never played before and had a hard time finding. With a positive attitude and his bag clattering along the fairways he failed to have his normal game and came in 31st place in a stacked field.

In the Net 2 division, we had five competitors: Hamm returned to try and defend his 2022 title, Bolduc, Steichen and Dan Olson were rookies in the competition, and Bernardy was making his 2nd straight appearance.

Dan Olson did not have his normal steller self and stumbled out of the gate and could not recover, posting 2 net scores that he would rather forget and finished 18th. Bolduc played ok on day 1 but had issues on his last 9 of the tournament to finish 16th. Hamm really struggled on day one and started day two 2 under net in the first 9, but also faltered stumbling to an 8th place finish.

Playing in the final group, due to their stellar play on Sat (Bernardy net 70 / Steichen net 72) Steichen shoots a gross 39 on the front 9 to Bernardy’s 41 making it a tight match. Then on hole 12, Bernardy hits a wall with a quad and Stiechen keeps the pressure on to finish with a gross 77, net 68 to win the event. Bernardy finishes at T3. A great finish by two fine competitors.

In the Net 1 division, Sifuentes returns to the event at his 2nd home course to try for a remarkable 3 peat, having won at Eastwood GC in 2021 and at Oak Marsh in 2022.
After day 1, Ramiro was tied for the lead at net 70 (-2). Playing in the last group, Ramiro sealed the deal with a 2 stroke victory after firing a stunning gross 73 (net 67).

Sifuentes, 3peat Flight 1 Champion / Steichen, Flight 2 Champion

Congratulations to all competitors for showcasing Brookview!

Metro Seniors Tighten up the Whole League

Even though they lost 13-11, The Valley team held the first place Fountain Valley team to a very limited victory allowing the rest of the field to advance in the standings. The top three teams are within 9 points and the Brookview Golden Team is in 4th place, only 19 points behind.

Starting on the back nine at Green Haven Golf Club, the Valley team got going with Chuck Bernardy winning the back 2-up but Ted Roberts losing down 1. Bernardy was down 2 after four holes but struggled back to even before playing the last hole badly losing down one but winning the match for 4 points. Roberts was going strong, up-2 until he blew up on number 7 and his opponent birdied #8, tying the front nine for 1 point. Captain Sheldon Silberman came to play shooting a net 67. He took the back nine 4-up shooting a 41 with a birdie lob wedge over the water on #18 to 4 feet and finished the front nine with 195 yard shot to middle of the green on 9 and settled for a tap in par to win the hole and garner all 6 points. Dan Peters saw the other side of the coin with his opponent shooting a net 70 for the second week in a row. Dan shot a respectable net 75 but was skunked leaving the team with an 11-13 loss.

The Golden team played Gross and booked a nice 15-9 win on a beautiful day for golf.  Team captain Roger Hamm struggled on the front shooting a 47 and going down by 2 but came roaring back with a 37 and wining the back 2-up for a 3 point tie on the match. A nice looking net 72. Playing partner Mike Deede had a rout going taking the front 4-up until his opponent roared back with a 4-up win on the back leaving Mike with a 3 point tie for the match. Steve Shellenbaum matched Roger’s net 72 but was able to squeak out a 1-up win on the front and then shot lights out on the back with 40 and won the back 4-up and took all six points. Chris Gaspard finally put some points on the board matching his opponent shot for shot and tying the front and the back and the match for 3 points and the team win.

Golden is now in 4th place and 10 points out of third.
Valley moved out the basement to 12th place, but just 10 points out of 9th.

Next Friday is at Valleywood. Valley takes on 7th place Green Haven and Golden plays 2nd place University – a BIG match.

WNL Week 11 Results (7/12/23)

A beautiful night for golf and the course is lush and green – Conditions that should result in some low scores. The only changes in standings were in the GVC East division where 9th Green at 9 moved ahead of Let’s Go Firebirds even though both teams won. The division leaders continue to lead. The wild-card chase continues to tighten with two teams, 9th Green at 9 and Sons of Parnarchy tied for the second spot in the GVC – and these two teams play each other next week!

Team Hack Attack (3) is still leading the entire league with 470 points but Brooky Strong is only 6 points back with a 2023 league high 51.5 point win this week over Foreplay.

Peter Crane moved back into the lead for our WNL MVP leader with 59.5 points and a 6.0 scoring average. The top 12 qualify for the season-ending Shootout.

Remember:

  • If you are not scheduled to golf on any particular night, we can use you as a spotter. It can help with pace of play.   To spot, just report to the pro shop and let them know and you’ll get a cart and flags for marking the ball. Common holes for spotting are #2, #3, #14, and #16. Or you can range around helping the groups that are slow catch up.

Weekly WNL Director Stats

  • Legibility was really good again this week – great job scorekeepers! Here is a listing of the the problems that slow down score entry:
    • Number cards without finish time: Front: 1, Back: 3
    • Cards with folds across scores: Front: 0, Back: 5
    • Cards with missing or addition errors: Front: 3, Back: 2
    • Cards missing team numbers or full names: Front: 2, Back: 1
    • Starting Tee times were on 32 of 32 matches. (Please enter the scheduled tee time, not your actual time to tee off.)
  • Pace of play – The front finished in 2:20 – but was running at under 2:15 until the last four groups. Great pace folks! The back finished in 2:30 minutes – typical. Keep working on it and keep your foursome on the heals of the group in front of you – everyone will appreciate your efforts! Thanks for all the volunteer spotters and rangers this week – volunteer if you can!
