What did it take to get into the top 4?
Steve C. played in all weekend events thus far. In those, he finished as a semi-finalist in 2-Person Match Play; 1st Place Net Club Champion, 2nd Place Rotation, 4th Place in the 2-Person Scramble.
Steve S. played in all weekend events thus far. In those 2nd in Rotation, 2nd in Fourball and won the Senior Club Championship Net.
Howard has played in 6 of 8 tournament. Taken first in 2-Person Scramble, Presidents Cup and Club Championship.
Matthew played in all weekend events thus far. Won the Greek Scramble, 3rd Rotation, 4th in 2-Person Scramble, 4 in Club Championship and 2nd in Presidents Cup.
That is a lot of consistent play between four players! Good luck in the rotation!
Although the course was wet under your shoes there wasn’t a drop of rain to be found during the tournament. And that allowed 40 players to hit the course on what was a windy but pleasant day of golf.
In the Gross Division, Howard Hoffman shot a 71 to score +7 points in the stableford scoring format. He was the only player to finish with a plus number in the Gross division. Second place went to Richard Brynteson with a 75 and -1 points. Third place to Ramiro Sifuentes and his -5 points (78) and fourth place to Matthew Payne at -6 (shotting his best ever score of a 77).
In the Net Division, it was another run away! Jeff Olson and his Net Double Eagle on #2 made it difficult for anyone to catch him. Shooting an 89 that lead to a +14 score. Second place was a tie between Matthew Payne and HoF/Past President Curtis Medina at +8 stableford score. Fourth place went to another HoF, Richard Brynteson with his +7 stableford score.
In the main event, our Past President’s, and Hall of Fame division. We had two returning members in Josh Mueller and Nick Schultz participate. Our champion was Curtis Medina at +8. Second place went to Richard Brynteson at +7.
Paul Olson (Edina Realty) Cleaned my clock last week. If you haven’t noticed how many great scorecard sponsors we have this year checkout the back! These guys are all great league contributors!
Next week we need to play just a tad faster! Give some putts guys!!! If you won the hole give your opponent the putt this is not the Fed Ex Cup.

Bill Cook was one of the senior members in the BMGA and I was a young new member in 1990. Bill was the type that would always request late tee times for events so he could get his stretching in. I on the other hand would come screaming into the parking lot on four hours sleep and barely make my tee time.
Bill passed away last week at the age of 92. He was a longtime member of the BMGA. His resume includes the Brookview Club Championship in 1969, the Senior Club Championship in 1992, 1995 and 1997. He was the MPGA President in 1977 and 1978.
I realize that there are only a handful of current members who even know who Bill was. But it is guys like Bill, Don Gustafson, Mike Essma, Don Schuenemann, Fred Sicora, Jim Sicora, Len Lewicki, Vince Kennedy, Henry Bongard, Bob Littlefield and many others that made my early days in the BMGA so fun. They had funny stories, stale jokes and could play some golf. They gave me pointers on how to play Brooky, which I obviously haven’t done very well! They were characters. They were the foundation of the early years of the BMGA and it is important that they are recognized and remembered.
We have 3 weeks left of regular season matchups… Don’t forget we are making up week 11 (Rainout) on Sept 8th. Captains make sure your team is ready to go and finish out the season. The standings are getting really close on some divisions so is imperative that we show up and not give FREE points to our opponents. Meaning Don’t FORFEIT…. Find a sub!

This week’s author is the Brookview National Historian, @Marty-Mangold himself.
The Metro Seniors wrapped up the season on Friday at famed Oak Marsh in Woodbury. The Metro Seniors League is made up of 16 teams from across the Twin Cities. Brookview has two teams who have been climbing the ladder all season. In the playoff matches, second place Brookview Golden went head-to-head with first place University. To claim the title, Brookview Golden would need a miraculous day and beat University by a score of at least 21-3. Impossible you say? Brookview Valley started the day in fifth place and was looking to finish on a strong note as well. Scores below for each player are gross/net and points won. Results….let’s start with the appetizer:
Brookview Valley vs Green Haven
Slivken: 91/80 – The combination of a bad day and a hot opponent sent Steve to the Pepto Bismol. 0 points. Mangold: 81/72 – Marty’s opponent had to bow out due to COVID, thus forcing him to play against the highly competitive “scorecard.” Mangold took inspiration from a line in the movie Remember the Titans. ”Run it up Herman…leave no doubt.” 6 points. Penk: 77/67 – Dean was the iceberg and his opponent the Titanic. 6 points. Zejdlik: 100/76 – It was just another day at the office for Randy. Send out invoices, collect money, three-hour lunches and check off another victim. 6 points.
An 18-6 victory pushed Valley past Theo Wirth by one point to finish in fourth place.
Now to the entrée! Brookview Golden vs University
Sifuentes: 82/75 – The recent state champ was up two with three to go for the 2 points on the front , but unfortunately lost the front-side. Ramiro rebounded nicely and won the back and overall. 4 points. Hamm: 82/71 – The captain had a solid day, sweeping the leg of his opponent, forcing him to beg for mercy. 6 points. Shellenbaum: 75/64 – Steve treated the course like a Steinway piano and put together a masterful performance. However, his opponent had a great front and dropped a 10-footer on #9 to claim the 2 points. Steve rose to the occasion and carved him up like a turkey at Thanksgiving the rest of the way. 4 points. Hop: 81/68 – Verne Gagne isn’t the only one with a sleeper hold! Stan lured his senior opponent to sleep with that silky smooth swing. No contest….tap out. 6 points.
The final tally was 20-4…falling just one point short of the miracle. As Three Dog Night would say….one is the loneliest number. The title came down to one putt, one hole, one stroke and one hot day. A valiant effort by Brookview Golden and a second place finish. My suggestion to team Golden…..one stiff martini…..well maybe two!
There were also some on-course events and skins Friday. Brookview fared well! Richard Courtney, Roger Hamm, Randy Zejdlik and Steve Shellenbaum all won some money for skins or one of the events.
It is amazing that some of the teams can’t even field a team of four players at times. Brookview not only has two teams, but both teams finished in the top four! What a fun season and great performances by both teams. A huge thank you to Roger Hamm and Sheldon Silberman for stepping up as captains. It is always more work than people think.

Shootout standings courtesy of Roger Hamm!!! Thank you!
With a wind whipping around and changing direction and lightning fast greens and a sloggingly slow round of golf, Brookview’s Seniors fought the elements at Braemar to finish the season.
The Valley team played to a 12-12 tie with Bunker Hills. 5 of the points came from @Chuck-Bernardy who played just well enough to win the front (on the 9th hole), tie the back and win the match. @Steve-Slivken started losing the first 4 holes but was able to win the back and narrowly lost the match to get his 2 points. @Richard-Courtney was off his game and could only get 1 point with a back 9 tie with a good par on the 18th. @Randy-Zejdlik was 4 down after 6 holes and mounted an impressive comeback to get 2 points on the back and win the match for a 4 point total.
The Golden team, needing a ton of points to catch first place University, started out with a bang versus Fountain Valley getting 11 of 12 from @Tom-Hansen and @Ramiro-Sifuentes who both shot 76. Tom’s 76 was good enough for 5 points after a half on the front 9. Tom played so well his opponent left. Ramiro’s 76 (net 70) was a 6-love blanking. @Steve-Shellenbaum joined in with his neat 84 (net 74) and won the front and the match for a 4-2 win. Unfortunately @Doug-Paquette did not have his A game and was blanked 0-6.
The top of the league standings look like this after the season final: 1 – University – 241 points 2 – Brookview Golden – 223 points 3 – Braemar – 213 points 4 – Wirth – 208 points 5 – Brookview Valley – 204 points 6 – Green Haven – 203 points
So Golden will play University in the playoff (position week) at Oak Marsh and start out 18 points back. Golden would have to beat a very good team 21-3 to be in a first place tie. Valley will play Green Haven and could end up anywhere between 4th and 6th depending on how they play and the result of the Braemar vs Wirth match.
